Not only does President Trump support this, the Republican Party is the primary pushers of "red flag" laws.

This is done in Louisiana currently. Judge can order a person's firearms seized who has a pending domestic violence case where the judge is convinced it's warranted.
ETA correction: as far as I can tell this only applies to those with protective order against them but still seem to recall something about the first situation as well.

I understand the sentiment, I really do, but let’s end gun-free zones and see what happens. Then maybe I’ll consider that such a law is necessary.

Much easier way, they will just make owning a firearm a federal crime with a mandatory prison sentence for being caught in possession of one. Then there will be a fixed time period to turn them in. So someone breaks into my house,
I pull a gun in self defense and they run off,
They report me,
I go to jail,
