while he was in college.

When Graham was a student at the University of South Carolina, both his parents died. His mother, Millie Graham, died at age 52 of Hodgkin lymphoma. She was soon followed by his father, F.J. — known in his hometown of Central as "the Dude" — who died of a heart attack at age 69. Graham's only sister, Darline, was just 13 years old.
Friends say Graham was a devoted brother, returning home each weekend to be with his sister. He ultimately adopted her after enlisting in the Air Force so that she could receive his military benefits.
In an ad cut for his 2014 race, Graham's sister recounted how her older brother cared for her after their parents died. "It was hard when we lost my mom and dad," Darline Graham Nordone said. "Lindsey assured me that he was going to take care of me, and he was going to be there for me. That's just who he is."

That was sad and 100% true. Part of the reason the Bible Belt here in Oconee county got him elected. His intentions in the beginning were good, but the establishment got to him quick. RIP Lindsey.

You can adopt your own sister?

It apparently happens to so many.

When they are a minor and there is nobody to take custody for the sake of legal guardianship, yes.
It’s more of a formality thing but it lets him sign her out for a Dr appointment or things like that.
One of my friends in HS had bum parents while he was finishing school and his college aged brother adopted him so that he could have a responsible adult doing drivers ed, college applications, etc.
Also having a low income person as a guardian when you’re applying for aid and FAFSA is helpful.

Weird, I know. Sad situation. I didn’t know Graham had to do this while in college. Imagine having to take care of your 13 year old sister while you were in college.
I have a daughter that age. I would be in a world of shite without my wife dealing with the drama that comes with that age.

On paper, sure.
She got taxpayer funded benefits because of it.

Back in the 1800s, women often let their sons who were no longer minors serve as legal guardians of their siblings.

I saw a list recently of the net worth of congressmen and Graham was only like 200k. I’m not sure he was corrupt. I think he just believed in what he supported. South Carolina is a big military state, so his pro war stances likely were more popular there

It says he went to see her most weekends so someone else was doing the raising during the week

Not hot, but average and she's in her late 50's.
