You're confusing the notion of birthrights with that of social entitlements. In the case of bridges, everyone has a birthright to try to cross a river for his well-being. And birthrights are automatic entitlements... you're entitled to bridges.
Now, as for specific rights to specific bridges, that's a different issue. My answer was in response to a general question... are we entitled to bridges? The answer is obviously yes.

I agree, which is why I argue that something like that is not "entitled".
Would you agree that we're entitled to at least some infrastructure if taxes are being collected for that very purpose?
quote:
That is like me trying to argue I am entitled to every benefit of the tax code because I pay taxes
Well technically you would be entitled to every benefit in the tax code so long as it actually applied to you. But it's impossible for them all to apply to any one individual or family.

That means I have access to something, but am not entitled to it.

Then explain how we are socially entitled to the use of a bridge. (you can use something else if you want, but I latched on to bridge because, well, it seemed recently popular)
I understand Powerman's reasoning, but if I am entitled to something, then my ability to use it cannot be infringed, no?

Well technically you're claiming you're entitled to the use there and not the bridge itself.

Sure
You could have your license revoked for a number of different reasons at which point it would be illegal for you to drive over the bridge. You could risk it but there could be consequences.

Actually, it does. And George Bush's, for that matter.

Funny. I hear people complain that he is deporting too many people as well.

What if GCA wants to walk across the bridge?

Not really. I would say I am entitled to my voice in where my money goes (infrastructure or whatever). I am not entitled to welfare benefits, yet my taxes are going towards them. If I was in the income level to access them, then I could, but if I cannot qualify, my right to them is not being infringed.

Well, yea. I was a bit brief in my comment, and I apologize for that.

No, just trying to debate what actually constitutes socially entitled. Feel free to ignore the conversation if you like.

Toll Rivers. He is double dipping.
ETA: Guys, its friday afternoon. I'm heading out for a bit.
Rex, I apologize if I cam off as an arse. It was not my intention. Just generally curious into your line of thinking once you started with your questions.

You are to the degree that some of these issues are decided on local ballots. But you aren't personally entitled to a damn thing.
quote:
I am not entitled to welfare benefits, yet my taxes are going towards them.
You aren't entitled to them because you don't need them
Just like the employed guy without a car doesn't need some bridge on the other side of town and still pays taxes to support it.

I don't think you understand the concept of welfare entitlements. They go to people that need them, not to everyone. That would defeat the purpose.

Well it sounded like you were rambling to meq

I believe he said that society is entitled to those things and he would be correct at least to some degree

Like I said, Rex disagrees. Notice he said "person", not society

But we know that not everyone NEEDS them that are getting them. And we know people are abusing the system with how they spend welfare entitlement. Are we to believe that people who have a 30K car, an iphone, and lots of gold and diamond jewelry NEED welfare entitlement or are we required to give them that entitlement because they choose to not work? Im all for increasing entitlements if its for people who actually cant work but Im not for increasing entitlements to people who make decisions that put them in the situations to need more. I am especially against those who make the same decision over and over just for the pure reason of increasing their entitlements.

That's not germane to the topic of this thread.
