Thanks. I enjoy medicinal chemistry and molecular biology. At work I deal with a lot of infectious disease and begun reading more epidemiology. One bright side of this covid19 business, I hope, is that more of us will begin to understand this better.

Here is another epub looking at variations between species and possible cross-species receptor usage. Its not much of a paper but highlights the point that figure makes.
Analysis of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) from different species sheds some light on cross-species receptor usage of a novel coronavirus 2019-nCoV
quote:

In conclusion, we conducted sequence and structural analyses of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) from different species, which sheds some light on cross-species receptor usage of 2019-nCoV. All these analyses raise an alert on a potential interspecies transmission of 2019-nCoV and propose further surveillance in other animal populations. Structural studies on human and other species ACE2 in complex with 2019-nCoV spike protein will contribute to understanding cross-species receptor usage of this novel coronavirus.

Absolutely no chance of that happening in the general population. I can see eye glass over when I mention biochemistry and molecular biology in public.

I’m 65 and take lisinopril for high blood pressure (20 mg/day). Should I talk to my doctor about switching to another medication?

But we do have the obligation to try. However some of the extremes on both sides on this board are trying enough.

Care to explain why this is hitting Italy so hard?

The area of Italy that has been hit so hard (Lombardy region) is basically Wuhan 2.0. That area has 100,000 Chinese nationals living and working there most from Wuhan. This is because the Chinese bought all the leather goods and textile manufacturing plants there. Most went home for Chinese New Year, returned and voila, hotspot.

I’ll summarize for everyone:
1. ARB’s like Losartan block the Coronavirus from binding to the receptors it needs to lock onto to infect you, thus, lessening symptoms or possibly preventing infection.
2. People that take ACE inhibitors or have risk factors that cause upregulation of ACE, such as diabetes/vascular diseases or genetic predisposition, are at greater risk of having increased complications if they contract the Coronavirus.
ARB’s and ACE inhibitors are most commonly prescribed to lower blood pressure.

I also take 20 mg lisinopril a day. If I stop taking it, how long will it take my ACE2 levels to go down to normal? Wondering if I can just wait til I show symptoms of the virus.

You really expect 95% of this board to be able to talk about ACE2, let alone even know what it is?
