Well. That's not the gotcha you think it is.

A plan, ANY plan, can have multiple potential effects that one can foresee.

I might think effect 1 is the most important reason. You might think effect 2 is. And so on.

Oh sure. It would be wonderful if economics was simple button pushing and you knew the red button cause ONE thing and the blue button caused ONE other thing.

Alas, yeah. That ain't reality.

The rollout of this was probably as damaging as the tariffs themselves. It was amateur hour, and still there is no congruent reasoning behind the tariffs.

This weird idea that everyone on one particular side share the same reasoning is silly on its face.

The only ones who need to have some agreement on their reasons are the ones directly responsible for enacting it. I don't work for Trump. The fact I may not share his specific view on it is irrelevant.

He's also talking about 15% corporate tax. That's why.

More like Nero, hopefully we recover

Nero burned Rome to build an edifice to himself.

Blamed the Christians for setting the fire.

Fed them to the lions, tigers, and bears in the Coliseum.

Turned out to be a massive narcissist

The nations debt has reduced the buying power for America's. We do not need skilled people making $15/hour for entry level jobs. We need to reduce debt and strengthen the dollar.

We cannot be the financial supporters for all of the world's needs. USAID has been abolished, thank the people who guided Trump on that strategy

Right now our "poor people" have a better standard of living than most people globally.

If we focus on America's needs and strengthen our currency, our country will have better standards of living.

Dollar sinks as investors grapple with tariff aftermath

quote:

The U.S. dollar sank against major peers on Thursday, dropping to six-month lows against the euro, and the safe haven yen and Swiss franc, as investors grappled with how U.S. President Donald Trump's far-reaching tariffs will impact global trade and economic growth.

The harsher-than-expected tariffs announcement sent shockwaves through markets, sinking global stocks and sending investors into the safety of less risky currencies, bonds and gold, fearing that a full-blown trade dispute could trigger a sharp global economic slowdown and fuel inflation.

Iterations of the "debt refi" theory involves a weakening dollar also, FWIW.

Uh, because you end up with no manufacturing base in critical industries and find yourself in the situation we are now???

Exactly, Friedman and the other academics like Sowell can't see the forest for the trees. The capability to make the product is much more important to the health of the country.

What did export the last 3-4 decades, our capability to innovate, design, and manufacture. And we traded that ti import cheap, planned-obsolescence junk.

This is done via government subsidy, not trade policy, and it hurts the economy. Do you think we can do this with all products?

But, we didn't. We're the #2 manufacturing in total output with the best mesh of total output and per capita value, we're still the innovator in the world in advanced ideas and design, etc.

And we traded that ti import cheap, planned-obsolescence junk.

The cost savings allowed us to invest in the areas of dominance above (which you incorrectly said we weren't good at anymore).

This is the power of building your argument on mistruths.

Now Trump says the focus is trade deficits. I can't keep up at this point. What are we doing here.

I'm starting to believe the "Refi" plan and he's just intentionally moving the goal to keep the recession dragging out until he can get rates low and refi that 9T in treasury debt.
