They all desire to cancel all seasons so they don’t have to admit to wokism being the reason the ratings suck.

Contracts are based on a mix of what was previously signed and the predicted sport-related income for the upcoming year.

In basketball, about 10-15% of salaries are held in escrow in case of a shortfall in Basketball Related Income (BRI) and the next year’s cap will be drastically altered if the money from the current year comes up short.

Know who gets fricked hardest if that happens? Anthony Davis, who is up for his third contract. His new deal is based off a percentage of a team’s salary cap amount for the upcoming season.

35% of $100m is a lot better than 35% of $80m or less, which is what may happen if they piss off the US market as well as the Chinese market.

Gawd I wish there was a sports board for this crap.

Some of us DGAF about a bunch of millionaires and billionaires trying to tell us how racist and stupid we are.

If they don't cancel, the virtue signaling will be too unbearable to watch anyway.

Sports board doesn’t care for politics and the politics board doesn’t want sports.

It’s like the Reese’s Cup from hell.

I can't wait for reality to hit them so hard next year. People are fed up with all of this and don't care, but the funding was already covered for this season.
Hoping like hell they get hit with a 50% or more pay cut for next year.

Will we see franchises go bankrupt?

There are several franchises in all four of the major pro sports leagues that have been struggling financially for quite a while. If there's any industry that needs a Great Reset, it's that one.

Take MLB. I've stated (only half jokingly) that this season, Miami, Oakland, and Tampa Bay should do very well this season playing in front of no fans, since those three franchises already have lots of experience playing in near empty stadiums.

In the NFL we hear lots of talk about Buffalo maybe moving to Toronto and Jacksonville moving to London.

In the NHL the grand "Southern strategy" that Gary Bettman tried to impose has been a failure. Atlanta relocates to Canada. Arizona -- having relocated from another city itself -- has threatened to relocate again numerous times. Florida has attendance issues. So do Carolina and Tampa Bay even though both have brought the Cup home to their cities. And now Dallas has screwed over its "fans" (actually opposing teams' fans who buy tickets) as recently discussed.

The NBA has some franchise issues, mainly Sacramento who was about to leave for Seattle but stayed at the last minute.

These marginal teams who were previously candidates for relocation, now the cities that may have been interested likely don't have the funds to make it happen nor are the citizens likely to vote for a tax increase either. And cities with teams now face large bills on which (due to no fans) they may default (Arlington TX has the new Globe Life and AT&T and has some large payments due -- and both the Rangers and Cowboys have historically solid attendance figures so payments weren't an issue before all this).

The follow-up meeting to the vote to boycott had the executive director of the NBA Player’s Association lay out the financial realities if they cancelled the season.

Disputed reports are that Patrick Beverly interrupted her and said, between the lines, she was full of shite. The rest of the players in the room decided to continue the season.

I'd imagine TV ratings will be down by large percentages.

Disney will carry them for as long as they can... It will take time for advertisers to realize their advertising is not reaching the masses for the money...

also, you are discounting the fact that advertisers and companies will be shamed into providing support for such woke organizations...

It will still be a show, just few will be watching...

Entire leagues?

There has already been talk about consolidating the minor league baseball system and that was BEFORE all this got started. With no minor league games this year, several franchises -- especially those not owned by the parent clubs -- could be in trouble, which may lead to one or more leagues folding or consolidating.

The WNBA is already a financial drain. It was already broke before the NBA went woke (remember, the Houston Comets won the first four titles; it no longer even exists as a team). Those teams which aren't owned by an existing NBA owner (e.g. Dallas Wings, who have a recurring issue of players demanding trades to get off the squad) are extremely vulnerable, would enough of them folding put the entire league in jeopardy?

At some point, ratings hit a threshold at which a network and/or the league has to give “make-goods”, which are extra ads given for free to buyers on those programs if the program didn’t hit the target ratings.

The prospect of “make-goods” is what helped kill the original XFL, as NBC’s ratings weren’t what they wanted them to be.

On top of that, there were issues with NBC selling ads at cut rates while WWE was selling them at full rate because NBC’s ad men were embarrassed they went from selling Olympics ads to a trashy football league while the WWE sellers were asking full price. As at least one buyer put it, “One of the two of you is full of shite.”

ESPN is already a money drain, the cable-cutting phenomenon has hit them hard since soi bois aren't watching sports (but someone forgot to tell them that if you watch their programming). There's long been talk that Disney may cut the cord (pun intended) and spin off ESPN as a separate company.

The WNBA players throwing fits about the Atlanta Spirit being owned by a Republican Senator might be hilarious in hindsight if the team or league goes bust.

Players on a league which is basically a parasite on the NBA shouldn’t be making waves to begin with.

Do the players get paid if they cancel the season? How brave of them if they do.

Regular season is done so they already get that money. But the playoffs players won’t get their playoff checks and the Basketball Related Income for next year will be destroyed.

And that doesn’t go into the possibility the owners opt out of the current bargaining agreement, which they have the rights to do given the pandemic and have a window until October to do so.

IOW, they can cancel and suffer few short term consequences but the long term consequences will be severe.

Are they still sitting out? I have not been paying attention.

So i checked for myself, they started back up so this talk of cancelling seems like a moot point.
