I make $30k a year and I’m alive. I have a house and a vehicle that’s paid for. Money is kind of tight but I can still buy whatever I need for the most part. I’d feel rich if I made 70k per year. It’s all about lifestyle. If you’re used to 200k a year I can see how 70k might seem unlivable.
Ditto.

Do you think someone making only $70k can afford to pay rent or a mortgage and for daycare? And then also buy diapers, formula, etc?
You seem out of touch, friend.
It depends on where you live, dumb arse.

Anywhere outside of a liberal shithole city, that is solid middle class.

$70k is more livable in the South than anywhere else. Why is that?

Nothing like those conservative shite hole rural towns, that contribute little to nothing to the state economy, yea? Those liberal shithole cities fund towns like the one I described.

Apparently to a progressive an area is a shithole if its not contributing to the tax roles.
Theyre paradise because they away from the urban assholes.

Millions of people live in America on less than 70k and do just fine ?
Just because some people are terrible with money doesn't mean it is impossible
A large portion of America is terrible with money. They have no clue how to budget, and some that do know how to budget just refuse to do it.
The amount of money that is blown monthly on just eating out alone is staggering. I know from looking at my own credit card statements. I like to have a good time, but I balance things out in other spots. Many do no balancing. And MANY buy cars and houses they simply cannot afford. It doesn't mean they can't afford decent cars or homes, but they just choose what they can't afford instead of what they can afford. So when you live like that, no salary is really liveable the way you want it to be.

1) no 70k has not been the starting salary for two decades. Again have no clue wtf you are talking about and most start north of 80
2) petrochemical as in refining and manufacturing of chemicals is anything but volatile, it’s the exact opposite
3) more engineers by % get the PE now. Before about a decade ago it was rare for many outside of civil to get it, now lots of them get it
Again you have zero clue wtf you are talking about. Sure petroleum engineering is volatile but everything else in the industry is not. Refining is stable AF and one of the best sectors to work in pay and benefit wise and offers great work life balance
The reason we have a shortage is because enrollment numbers are down in the US overall in traditional engineering disciplines as many are going into software and computer science

I honestly don’t know who that person is but 70k isn’t enough to raise a family on. $140k is, but not 70.
I do consider $70k to be a living edge where I live though.
