Hezbollah's leader says the Iran-backed militant Shia group and its allies have achieved "victory" in Lebanon's first parliamentary elections since 2009.

Reuters news agency said a tally based on preliminary results showed Hezbollah and its allies had won at least 67 of the 128 seats in parliament. But the number of Hezbollah MPs was little changed at around 13.

It is designated a terrorist group by Western states and Israel, with which it fought a war in 2006, and several of its members are accused of being behind the 2005 assassination of Mr Hariri's father Rafik - himself a former Lebanese prime minister.

More than a million refugees have fled to Lebanon since then, swelling the population by 25% and overwhelming public services.

Hezbollah has also sent thousands of its fighters to Syria to support forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad in battles against predominantly Sunni rebel forces and the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

Harari is Sunni, and among other things, he’s Riyads creature.

Amal is a traditional Shi’a movement, like Hezbollah.

Christians have become a major supporter of Hezbollah.

The Saudi's dropped Harari back in November and offered no financial support to him at all. I'm wondering if they knowingly just created a ticking time bomb by pulling their support from him.

The Saudi's are idiots

Their one track Wahhabi mind can't see two steps forward.

This. Israel screwed the pooch so bad in 2006. It was Hezbollah's sorta victory in that conflict that made them the de-facto government of that country for the last 12 years. 2006 united even the Christians behind Hezbollah, something that would have been unthinkable prior to the Israeli invasion.

from the Article:

A power-sharing system stipulates that the prime minister should be a Sunni Muslim, the speaker of parliament a Shia and the president a Maronite Christian.

Israel bombed the hell out Lebannon last time when they were unprepared militarily. I suspect if that were to occur again Lebanon's Shiite areas would be completely destroyed.

Agreed

I don’t think their reflexive militarism is doing them any favors, not anymore at least.

Their meddling in Syria has only made the Syrian government stronger, and its drawn Tehran further in.

They’re making their own problems worse at this point.
