If I am not mistaken that is the oldest refinery in Russia. Satellite view shows the weirdest looking refinery I've ever seen. It's not a large or complex refinery

what can the Ukrainans do to stop it?
Good question.
They have to keep doing what they’ve been doing. Hold the Russians off until something changes. It’s not a great option, I know, but it’s their only one right now and they’ve shown to be good at it.

quote:Yes, it evidently is since the Baku area refineries are now in Azerbaijan. Build date could be 1911, but as there are a number of refineries in the Krasnodar Krai area and as 'Krasnodar' is also a generic term for all refineries in this region, it is difficult to determine if this is the specific Slavyansk-na-Kubani refinery.

The refinery referred to has (2006) an installed refining capacity of 3 million tons of low sulfur diesel per year. It also (in 2006) was the only one in Russia able to supply T-1 high density jet fuel. So not an insignificant complex.
By the way, Ukraine has a refinery even older, the Halychyna Oil Refinery Complex near Lviv was built in 1863. This is a smaller unit and one of five refineries in Ukraine still operating. A sixth in Kherson was shut down. But none of the others have been hit. I guess without kindergartens or hospitals located within the refinery they don't attract attention.
Halychyna-
The history of the oil bidness is possibly the best history there is out there. Not to digress, but old refineries and the Russian chronology are a big part of the story. If interested in the classic, Yergin's 'The Prize' remains unequaled.
Back on track, of the 20 largest Russian oil refineries, 16 have been hit by the Ukrainians so far. But the day is young...
Putin and TACO can delay all they want but at this rate Putin won't have any refining capacity left by the end of the year or sooner. Depending on the roll-out date of the German/Ukrainian long range cruise missile.
As exported petroleum is by far the most important source of foreign currency for Putin now, this drone campaign will not only destroy Russia's ability to continue the war but more importantly, it will destroy their ability to pay for it. Near term, the Chinese only take gold and forex for payment and the gold production isn't enough by itself to keep the Chinese military supplies coming.
Putin is losing this war and believes the Epstein file will save him. But there is no film of the Ukrainians raping underaged children, so they aren't going to stop hitting the Russian refineries. They can build and operate their own refinery-killing drones without US aid and will never let a compromised pedophile decide the future of their country.

Ukraine is ready for real decisions that can bring peace. Any decisions that are against us, any decisions that are without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not achieve anything. These are stillborn decisions. They are unworkable decisions. And we all need real and genuine peace. Peace that people will respect.
We are ready to work together with President Trump, together with all our partners for real and, most importantly, lasting peace. A peace that will not collapse because of Moscow's desires.
from the Kyiv Independent:
President Volodymyr Zelensky firmly rejected on Aug. 9 the idea of ceding any Ukrainian territory to end Russia's war, following U.S. President Donald Trump's statement of a possible territorial "swapping."
The day before, Trump claimed that peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv would likely involve "some swapping of territories." The statement comes as the U.S. president prepares to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week.
"The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question is already in Ukraine's Constitution. No one will deviate from this — and no one will be able to. Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier," Zelensky said in his evening address.

August 9, 2025 11:21 am
Russian attacks against Ukraine killed at least eight civilians and injured at least 24 others over the past day, regional authorities reported on Aug. 9.
Russian forces launched 47 Shahed-type drones and decoys from Russia's Millerovo, Kursk, and Shatalovo, and two Iskander-K missiles from Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Oblast against Ukraine overnight, according to Ukraine's Air Force.
Russian drones attacked Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk Oblast, while missiles targeted the regional center of Dnipro in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Ukraine's air defense and electronic warfare intercepted one missile and 16 drones, while another 31 drones reached their targets in 15 locations.
In Donetsk Oblast, Russian attacks killed two people and injured two others in the town of Siversk, while another person was killed and five were injured in the town of Kostiantynivka. Three people also suffered injuries in the villages of Yampil, Korovii Yar, and in the town of Bilytske, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.
In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a Russian FPV (first-person-view) drone killed two people in the Zaporizhzhia district, hitting a car. Russian forces launched 585 strikes across 11 localities in the region in the past day, according to the local military administration.
In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a 41-year-old woman and two men, aged 21 and 29, were injured in the Russian attack against Dnipro. In the city of Nikopol, a 56-year-old woman was killed, and a 62-year-old man was injured in another Russian strike on the region, Governor Serhii Lysak reported.
In Kherson Oblast, Russia targeted 36 settlements, including the regional center of Kherson, over the past day. As a result of the attacks, one person was killed and another three, including a child, suffered injuries, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin reported.
In Kharkiv Oblast, Russia attacked 13 settlements, injuring seven people, Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported. In the town of Kupiansk, two men, aged 63 and 69, as well as three women, aged 70, 66, and 86, suffered injuries. In the village of Kluhyno-Bashkirivka, Russian strikes injured a 43-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl.
In Sumy Oblast, a Russian drone injured a 50-year-old man in the Seredyna-Buda community, according to the local military administration.

Not complex and run of the mill
As far as Ukraine, almost all of its refineries were idled post 2014. The few not idled limped along well below nameplate capacity.
A refinery is just not something you put any crude oil through. Take the last grassroots refinery built in the US and completed in 2020. It was designed for Eagle Ford crude oil. The indie owner got a good deal on heavy crude. The crude column all but turned into a block of asphalt (tar)

If tweet fails to load, click here. Alas, no film and at 1300km, it was long range but not long enough for Yalabuga. But hitting finished Shaheds enroute to launching areas is good stuff while we wait for the long range cruise missiles to come on line.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 8, 2025
Aug 8, 2025 - ISW Press
Key Takeaways:
Kremlin officials are reportedly demanding that Ukraine cede to Russia strategically vital unoccupied territory in Donetsk Oblast and freeze the frontline in other areas as part of a ceasefire agreement.
The surrender of the rest of Donetsk Oblast as the prerequisite of a ceasefire with no commitment to a final peace settlement ending the war would position Russian forces extremely well to renew their attacks on much more favorable terms, having avoided a long and bloody struggle for the ground. Conceding such a demand would force Ukraine to abandon its "fortress belt," the main fortified defensive line in Donetsk Oblast since 2014 — with no guarantee that fighting will not resume.
Russia's failure to seize Slovyansk in 2022 and ongoing struggles to envelop the fortress belt underscore the success of Ukraine's long-term efforts to reinforce the fortress belt cities.
Russian forces are currently still attempting to envelop the fortress belt from the southwest and are engaged in an effort to seize it that would likely take several years to complete.
Ceding Ukrainian-held parts of Donetsk Oblast will place Russian forces on the borders of Donetsk Oblast, a position that is significantly less defensible than the current line.
Russian positions along the Donetsk-Kharkiv and Donetsk-Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border areas would provide a more advantageous launching point for a future Russian offensive into nearby areas of Kharkiv or Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. ISW continues to assess that Russian forces will almost certainly violate any future ceasefire or peace agreement and renew military aggression against Ukraine in the future unless a peace agreement includes robust monitoring mechanisms and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Putin's reported proposal once again underscores that he maintains his uncompromising demands for Ukraine's capitulation and remains disinterested in good-faith negotiations.
The Kremlin does not appear to be setting the domestic information conditions necessary for the Russian people to accept a settlement short of full victory in Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces advanced near Kupyansk and Toretsk. Russian forces advanced near Lyman, Toretsk, and Pokrovsk.

I’d rather Trump move on to dealing with the seemingly inevitable China attack on Taiwan. Putin is making him look gullible and weak.

I don't know who is the bigger idiot here. Witcoff by mis-stating Putin's demands, leaving out Crimea from the grab or Putin by refusing the US proposal 'to freeze the conflict on the current front line in exchange for a broad lifting of sanctions and new economic agreements with Russia'.
TACO's proposal was so good for Putin that had to have been written by the Kremlin. They're now realizing TACO rolled over too fast and they needed to demand more.
Whatever. Another refinery will get hit while they're competing for lowest cognizance level.
Edited to add: It is now being reported that while in Moscow, Witcoff used an FSB translator. Incredible as that may seem, if accurate, this was not the first time this has happened.

Witkoff misunderstood Putin, the Kremlin still wants to get Crimea recognized as Russian and Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson regions in full, - BILD
He only proposed a refusal to attack energy facilities and large cities, but not a comprehensive ceasefire.
The US, on the other hand, proposed to freeze the conflict on the current front line in exchange for a broad lifting of sanctions and new economic agreements with Russia.
According to BILD, the Kremlin did not want to accept this proposal.
Moreover, Witkoff misunderstood Putin's key statements and considered them a concession.
"Witkoff doesn't know what he's talking about," a Ukrainian government official told BILD.

Modi refuses to make a decision, so the Indian State oil companies have decided to stop using Russian crude. However the private oil companies - 49%+ owned by Russians - are still buying Urals. But they are demanding a 5% discount on top of all the other price cuts. So Rosneft is screwing their own government while that government is in desperate straits. If you've ever known a crude trader, this is not surprising at all.

If you've followed Trump for a while it's not just Putin doing that.
I think it's a symptom of him having no real firm ideology or views. If you don't have some form of recognized reality to ground you it's easy to get blown back and forth on issues.
