What if the government said it balanced the annual budget and did it by just printing money. How long would they get away with it before they were found out?

Zimbabwe style $1,000,000,000,000 bank notes become the new penny.

We would be 1,000,000,000 in debt within 24 hours at current spending levels.

All they have to do is fudge the numbers and say its balanced and we're there.

My guess is this will end with the gov't declaring bankruptcy and forming a new government.

Something tells me if there isn't an appreciable effort from the Federal government to rein in the unsustainable debt spiral the Law of Big Numbers ($40 trillion) coupled with an annual debt service of over $2 trillion will have their say.

Trump is on record talking about intentional inflation as a way of making the debt easier to handle. People either pay attention or they don't.

Yes and Dubya did the same. It is an old trick that has been attempted by other nations with poor results.

US dollars are nothing more than a fiat note backed only by “the full faith and credit “ of the US Goverment …. Which has been worsening for decades .. we’ve received agency credit downgrades 3 times since 2011.

quote:

he United States has lost its top credit rating from all three major agencies: S&P cut it to AA+ in 2011, Fitch followed in 2023, and Moody’s downgraded it to Aa1 in May 2025. As of 2026, no major agency rates US sovereign debt at the top AAA/Aaa tier for the first time in over a century.

In order to produce dollars, the Treasury issues corresponding bonds, …. and therein lies the problem. US treasuries aren’t in favor by the worlds central banks anymore like they were 20 years ago ….. much higher risk due to the lower credit-worthiness.

What are the worlds central banks buying instead of treasuries? They’re buying gold

Consequently, the US must payout higher rates for the same bonds to attract more buyers …. and that higher interest which affects the entirety of $40 Trillion in US Debt. It’s a bad spiral because CONgress refuses to control spending.
