Well the debt is real you can’t just fudge the numbers. The debt is held by owners of treasury bonds who expect the interest payments. You cannot fudge the numbers to show a balanced budget because that money is spent, its real and it has to come from somewhere.
You can print money to pay the interest and principal on these bonds but that devalues the currency by increasing the money supply and leads to inflation.
I have wondered if there’s a way to offload trillions in debt at once through essentially “printing money” without those negative effects by injecting large volumes of cash into our economy. Print money to purchase gold from other countries then pay the principal back on the bond with gold instead of USD?
