I used to wonder about that -- why can't cops just shoot a dude in the leg or something. That's apparently against all training everywhere.

WTF is this bullshite? The worst fights I've been in were females that I arrested. Also, police are not just protecting themselves; they are protecting people that can't protect themselves. Since when did using deadly force become only necessary if protecting themselves?

Now define 'very close proximity' - take all the time you want - and just imnagine trying to fit that definition to fit an infinite variety of situations.

21 feet is the standard distance for “danger close” with a knife.
