It’s been awhile, but I seem to recall the MSM maybe hated DJT long before his first press conference and possibly gave a tad bit more election coverage to his opponent. So i would not exactly say his “declaration of war” was “unprovoked”. More like an “in kind” response.

They simply have ran of the rails Capitlizing on a fringe market of radicals and government elects that require a perpetuation of their message based on unnamed Sources. In other words my friend their rhetoric trumps journalism to the 9th degree. They never never attribute a single word they say with public record. Almost all of their “reporting” has become entertainment or Op-Ed pieces.
Van Jones for example got his position at CNN BY WORKING A FELLOWSHIP WITH A GEORGE SOROS FOUNDATION. In his tenure at CNN he has never dissented from the opine that got him there despite public record proving him wrong.
(See this election is a whitewash statement).

My disdain for mainstream news is that it's devolved into tabloid. Tell me what the topics are in a given night- our current president's past relations in 2000? Claims made by a porn star? These are topics that are irrelevant.
CNN has always been run by a strongly Left leaning billionaire, but over the past decade they've dropped the pretense of being objective. 95% of what is broadcast is not news, it's editorial and one-sided. And the "news" is often edited to fit the intent; that's why the same event will be decribed differently by different outlets.
As for "attacks"- Trump was elected, which means there is a sizable base that voted for him and presumably supports him. On some of these networks and outlets, you get the impression that segment of the population doesn't exist. Any medium that presents that slant isn't objective, so I disregard them.
