The insane thing about this AI "race" between countries is that eventually, we're all heading to the same demise.
AI won't recognize flags nor governments, they eventually will find ways to communicate with other AI's and share information which helps AI, and have no concern for what we humans think or rather.
It's amazing how folks can't see the only logical conclusion to this situation.

I worry about who is training the models and how influential even a small shove towards some ideology could be. (Hell, half of what we have now probably came from Reddit.)
As people get more dependent on LLMs for example, imagine how many people might ask, "Who should I vote for," or "Does China ever violate human rights," and how just a few small fibs in the source data could legitimately shape policy.
Remember when the Biden administration wanted to influence how social-media companies handled what it regarded as misinformation? Think about how scary that would've been, and still could be.

I'd agree with that. I think the top companies are realizing that there is no real moat around LLM and similar models in machine learning. How quickly others caught up to OpenAI is telling in that respect. So, since the barrier to entry is simply investment, these players seek to create other barriers to market entry to protect their position.

Probably why OP mentioned liquidity, not ROI and breakeven analysis. They are building so fast and just praying that the market sorts out what to do with all of this computing power before they run out of cash.

Exactly, the amount of component buys they made essentially suffocated the rest of the market which is why consumer electronics have seen price explosion.
Ultimately, I think the future of machine learning tech is on-device models and subscriptions for specific skills (MCPs) you need to your job/hobbies on computing devices. Additionally, I think the most promising area for this “AI” is in software development. I think the applications for general consumers are less promising and essentially rely on the average person being a moron with no taste or discernment. However, transformer models were built for translation and translating requirements into 90% correct code is a value add since so much of programming is bogged down with rote boilerplate. I think this is why tech thought they’d really discovered something revolutionary because it is well suited to aspects of their job. Unfortunately, I think it’d be best served sparingly in many other fields.

Buddy, the phone call is coming from inside the house. The major AI players are trying to create regulatory barrier to entry because they realize that it is quick to catch up in this sector if you have money to throw at the problem. It’s rather chickenshit. A good example of the crony capitalism you hear democrats talk about unfortunately.
