re: John Walton (Walton & Johnson) has passed

They lost half a dozen stations in Louisiana (one of their oldest markets with a ton of listeners), and the ones they kept cut them off at 9. They were on Eagle 98.1 from 6:00am-10:00pm M-F for over 20 years, but they got dropped and switched to 97.7 which doesn't have 10% the range and listeners as 98.1.
I listened to them for years. I get that the progressive world got more depressing, but they simply stopped being funny. They went from being a goofy break from the dreariness of the 24 hr news cycle to just another spoonful of despair. Walton has sounded like a broken man for a while. Trump seemed to give them a little hope, but they never seemed to get the humor back.

They made deals with different stations. Eagle demanded that they accept less pay because of Eagle's shitty management, so they hit the road. There was even a lawsuit over it.
JBO is every bit as big in the BR market, and also covers the BR to NOLA corridor.
They are now on again in New Orleans, where they had not broadcast for years, and their new affiliate map works much better for their I Heart Radio profile.
I get that you don;t like them, because you're a pussy, but they weren't losing popularity, as much as you want that to be true.

I think they were undergoing a rebirth - of sorts - with Trump.
I've been a fan since before their split, so sometime in the late 80s when I first moved to BR, so that means I've already listened to them - on and off - for 30 years.
But I also recall John was mentored by Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett (with whom W&J briefly competed) and Morning Radio shows don't have an old timers day (if you don't count Don Imus). Those guys live fast and die young (generally).

I could tell yesterday (I drive a work van with AM/FM radio only) that John was sounding off. He all of a sudden sounded very old with no energy in his voice and just didn't sound like himself.
Something is going on.
Something is going on.

I had thought something was up over the past week or so Walton's voice was really starting to sound weak....and old. I've been listening to these guys since they started in New Orleans in the mid 1980's

Sad! Also grew up listening to Walton and Johnson.
Anton was the GOAT caller.
Anyone know what happened to "the dark one," Jay Hooks I think was his name? That dude was nuts.

Where the hell did this come from?
I just said they're not as funny as they used to be and that they became more sad and depressing as they got older. They still have an occasional good segment. I'm not OFFENDED by them. I just decided that I arrived at work in a better mood listening to music or sports talk on my commute instead of Walton & Johnson rehashing the same stuff I read on TD every day. The mood clearly shifted from light-hearted poking fun at the news to drowning in it.
I'd much rather listen to them than Condon's nonsensical babbling in Chalmation every day, but what I'd REALLY like to hear is some goddamn music! Is that so much to ask!?

I think Hooks was their last producer in New Orleans before they moved back to Houston.

Look, I used to be in radio. I called football on the air and did the news. I also ran a lot of syndicated shows on nights and weekends. I love great radio men. I listened to Art Bell and CtC, not necessarily for the content, but because there was something about Bell's voice and demeanor that made whatever he was talking about sound more interesting. Everyone has a great voice in radio, but only the very few are great radio men. W&J have been 2 of my favorites. And yes, I love that they basically get away with doing black face every morning.

Been listening since the 80’s, they are hilarious, so sorry to hear John is not well, I sincerely wish him the best.

In terms of "blackface".....they have calmed down quite a bit over the years from when they were just a morning riot.
Aside from Mr. O there was also "Marcus" as well as Abdul Khamel Jockee.
Also the Story Guy was great back in the day
Never really got to know John Walton, but Steve Johnson was and probably still is one of the nicest and coolest guys you will ever meet

W&j got really really good since Obama left office. Not bc of trump but just bc they stopped talking about Obama the whole show.

I don't think Steve's portrayal of Eaux can be deemed demeaning or offensive, in context, particularly with how stereotypical Billy Ed and Kenneth are. Everyone is fair game and Eaux holds his own with the others. Bigger problem is that clearly that is the toughest, physically, of the three main voices Steve does. I mean, he does a version of his own voice, just redneck for Billy Ed and flamboyantly for Kenneth. He has to affect a true accent with Eaux, plus drop the frequency.

Walton was in college by 1970 or 1971 - so I put his birth year between 1948 and 1952 - so he is between 67 and 71. He's consistently referred to Trump as being "a little older" than he is.
Walton was ranting one day and said that he was 1 year older than Howard Stern. Stern is now 65 so your estimate is pretty dead on.

My issue isn't with the slant but the mood. I'm a conservative too. The mood used to be poking fun at liberals and laughing. The mood shifted over the years to disgust at what the progressives were doing and being depressed because they couldn't stop it. I didn't stop listening because I didn't agree with them, I stopped listening because they were no longer entertaining me. I was listening to laugh, and when they weren't making me laugh any more, I listened to something else, mainly Condon Uncensored because they still play music half the time, and when that insufferable blowhard Condon starts yapping, I change the channel to literally anything else.

This is really good to hear. If Walton weren't dying, I'd be tempted to listen in a little more.

His ability to seamlessly switch voices and personalities is amazing.
