John Lewis has crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge one last time. RIP

I was a young baw in the 60’s and distinctly remember the social unrest during the civil rights era, I particularly remember the integration of the public schools. When I think back to that period of my life it truly seems like a movie I may have watched but it was real.
This morning as I watch the caisson carry John Lewis body across the Edmund Pettus bridge one last time I think of the brave men and women who locked arms on March 7, 1965 to walk across that bridge in Selma AL. They knew they were in certain danger for bodily harm, including death and they walked anyway.
Congressman Lewis was one of those brave souls who walked across that bridge and he would pay the price for challenging the establishment of that separate but equal era because these civil rights pioneers knew they were yet to be considered equal. Mr Lewis‘ skull was fractured, his body was battered but he sacrificed himself to help move our society forward towards true equality.
I find little in common with John Lewis politically. During his time in Congress Lewis frequently drummed up racial divisiveness for no good reason, he knew the racial aspect of identity politics was a powerful motivator to keep Black Americans voting for the Democrat Party.
I can put my political differences aside and recognize John Lewis’ historical contributions to racial equality, yes, Mr Lewis was a man of remarkable bravery and his steadfast belief in the Democrat Party never wavered. RIP John Lewis.

Lewis became what he marched against later in life- a racist.
He hated white people and espoused many of the beliefs that you are seeing in the street- WHITENESS IS BAD AS A MATTER OF FACT

Like McCain his earlier life actions are eclipsed by him being a race pimp shitbag when he held a position of power.

You are very wrong.
He didn't become a racist after any march on the 60s. He was one all along.

So many Swamp politicians showed themselves for who they truly are when Trump whipped their girls azz! When you decide to disrespect the office of the presidency by not attending the inauguration of a duly elected POTUS and to make it worse you slander and libel the duly elected POTUS I ask what type of person are you really?

It's fitting that he is ending by repeating the only important thing he ever did in his life

As he crossed, did they smack up the corpse a bit with the a night stick for old time's sake?

These maudlin televised displays of faux-grief for truly mediocre human beings grows tiresome.

Dude made a career out of one nightstick to the head for ignoring a lawful order.

Respect him for what he did at Selma.
And really not much after that.
It balances out. Rest in peace, Mr. Lewis.

Yes, this ^^^^ is pretty much the sentiments of the OP. The issue I've always had with many of the pioneers from the civil rights struggle was after CRA legislation and other advances in racial equality these people couldn't move on.....they continue to pick the scab of past racism by using identity politics .

It's going to be on ALL week, everyday. Week long funerals with speeches and speeches are just over-the-top, IMHO.

If only he had Obamacare.
If only he had Obamacare.

Oh I remember that great day when Nancy Pelosi grabbed her giant comedy gavel and grabbed ol' John and tried to stir up some shite after they passed obamacare.
They were surely going to get some racist comments from some Tea Partiers by rubbing their noses in it.
They didn't get any but CBC members in good standing have a license to lie so John made some up.
He was too stupid to see the zillion phones recording every second of the event so he got caught.
No problem, just swipe that CBC card and you stay golden.
I can put my political differences aside and call a lying piece of shite a lying piece of shite no matter how many places his body gets dragged to.

His career in Congress destroyed whatever honor he may have been entitled to for his Civil Rights efforts.

I’m surprised that bridge is still named after Pettus. He was a confederate general and member of the KKK.
