Everyone stood. McCarthy stood. The entire building stood. He was trying to riff and he killed that whole future talking point.

Who called him a liar? I can’t watch. Was it a “You lie” moment?

Joe tried to claim that some Republican are putting forward bills to cut SS & Med, and the Republicans started screaming who? He said he wouldn't name names, then asked people to stand up if they wouldn't cut them and everyone stood up.

Whether planned or not, he baited the Republicans and they went for it. Effectively nailed down commitment that SS&M won’t be touched, taking a potential bargaining chip off the table. Well played, to be honest. And that will be the lead for most stories on the speech tomorrow.

Well he actually teed up the next hit piece tonight. When the republicans threaten government funding with not raising the debt ceiling that is going to be the dems connection to “republicans not funding social security blah blah blah”

It's always been a Democrat talking point that seniors must vote D or the R will cut your SS&M. The truth is that every R plan to save SS is to ween young people off of SS, but not cut current benefits.

Agree. But I think he went a long way toward taking the discussion off the table, and thus claiming victory in upcoming budget discussions. If someone from the R side does float a proposal, he can cite the “consensus” tonight and shut it down. Again, just my opinion.

Depends on the proposal. If the proposal is to allow workers to choose to opt out of SS and force employers to put the employer portion in a 401k type plan, then a lot of people will be all for it.

I would be all for the elimination of self-employment taxes. As someone that files a Sch C for a side hobby that has less than 2k of income, that extra tax hurts more than it will help when I retire.

SS and medicare were never on the table in this discussion. Unlike every other item in the budget, both SS and medicare remain in balance for the time being. The remainder of the budget is $1.4 Trillion in deficit at present.

So now both parties have identified an area that is untouchable, why are D's not willing to cut other areas of the budget that the R's are willing to cut? [start sarcasm]Complete shite show for the R's [end sarcasm]

This whole debt limit argument boils down to the kids voted for the family to take VIP tours at Disney World, why won't the adults take out a fifth mortgage and more credit cards to pay for what the kids already voted for?

This is why the crash is inevitable. By far the largest expenditure in the entire government and not a person is willing to reduce it.

The irony. It was Joe Biden and his corrupt pals in Congress who stole Social Security back in the mid-eighties. S/S is just another income tax stream for Biden and his pals to spend on proxy wars in Ukraine or whatever. Now this buffoon plays the hero by accusing the Republicans of theatening to cut S/S.

As lying, cheating, morally bankrupt a bunch as I've ever seen these Biden democrats.

You do realize this can't go on forever. There will be a day of reckoning.

There's your boy democrats - the leader of the free world.

He hasn’t taken any bargaining chip off the table. He’s created a strawman. He’s a lying corrupt piece of shite.
