Her unpaid tickets put her $20,000 in debt and at risk of jail. Activists are fighting for changes.

Jessica Washington, a single mother of two, moved from Chicago to Las Vegas in 2006 after she lost her airline job and needed a fresh start. In some ways, she found it: She moved into a roomy apartment, got hired by the Transportation Security Administration, and bought a used BMW.
Then the police began stopping her.
The first time was for a broken taillight, which she said came with a warning from the officer: “You’re going to get pulled over a lot driving this car.” Washington took it to mean that as a Black woman driving a nice automobile, she would be seen as suspicious.
The stops continued, for minor violations, even after she switched cars. She soon fell behind paying the tickets and her insurance, which led to more tickets, and more fines and fees that she couldn’t cover.

Exactly. If you're driving like an a-hole and have a busted taillight or expired tags, you're going to get a ticket.
It doesn't sound like this has anything to do with a "black person in a nice car." It sounds like she is just trying to pass off her liability for being a shite motorist on someone else because she thinks rules dont apply to her.

I’ve gotten at least $1,000 in tickets in my life. You know what I did? I paid them before the court date. I also made adjustments to my driving behavior, e.g., using cruise control to make sure I didn’t speed.

Why are they letting someone drive around without insurance and without a registered automobile? They should have arrested her and impounded the car until she got her sh!t straightened out.

Once her local police established that she drove without insurance, she might as well have had a neon “Ticket Me” sign on the car. Even worse, she had a rep as the idiot who drives a fricking BMW with no insurance.
Once in my life I’ve driven with an expired license, and as soon as I realized it was expired I went to get it renewed. Never driven with expired tags or registration. It’s not difficult to keep up with that, and it’s more expensive to get caught without them. Also not racist.
