She put out a statement. If the reported translation was wrong, why not say so?

What do you think that changes? Again, context matters. She chose to conclude in Spanish because she is Guatemalan before she is American. It's the only translation that makes sense given the statement.
Not a simple enough explanation for you? How about this: Que is used for comparisons. She clearly inserted Que into her statement. If you deny that, you must have a hearing problem. If she wanted to say but I am first an American she would have inserted a coordinating conjunction like "pero" or "aunque" followed by a simple "soy Americana."
Context. Grammar. Doesn't matter. Either angle wrecks your foolish, foolish attempt to claim she meant something else.
