If this is the pretext let's game it out. We do this, likely with some supporting strikes focused on preempting Iranian retribution. Iran gets off a few dozen ballistic missiles at US interests in the region. We respond in more or less kind.
Is that not likely the end of it? Basically, how can Iran genuinely escalate to a level that makes this a quagmire? I'm not saying it's impossible - history indicates it might even be likely - but I just don't see it. I assume the DC crowd thinks Iran will not devolve into theocratic civil war (the conventional wisdom for post-revolution Iran for decades in DC), which would also limit that potential.
Part of the reason Israel is acting now is because they spent the last 3-4 years neutralizing proxies that Iran would use during this saga. Those same hobbled proxies will be limited in how they can mount attacks against US interests.
