This is somewhat typical of both the Jewish and Palestinian mentality. Both sides are infatuated with their own victimhood and constantly try to "out victim" each other on the world stage and for this reason, I'm skeptical that Israel actually wants to solve this problem.
To subdue Gaza and eradicate Hamas is to give up an important piece of the Israeli Jew identity and culture. Just as accepting a peace agreement on the part of the Palestinians gives up the same thing.
The collective cultural psychology of all this cannot be overstated. Jews have successfully positioned themselves as the world's preferred victims and they will not be supplanted by Palestinians. They won't allow that.
We'll know soon enough how serious Israel actually is about putting an end to all this. I think there may be some disappointed folks around these parts.

Probably not many.
They’ll protest/jihad/dirka dirka/whatever only in soft areas where they know much of the population is unarmed and helpless.
Israel’s silly law prohibiting most citizens from owning firearms made them an easy target. Kudos to the one well armed family there who passed out extra weapons to unarmed folks and killed terrorists.
