Is your school protecting your teachers or your children?

I just found out that a teacher/coach in a Portland school (for 32 years) has been fondling and sexually harassing middle school girls for years and every time he got caught, he switched schools. The school district protected this child molester for years.

Per the union contract, all of the incidents got removed from his personnel folder every time he switched schools.

This is personal to me, because this man belongs to the club where I work out and play tennis. I have played doubles with him on a number of occasions and we've played in doubles tournaments together a few times. I considered him a friend, but I would totally deck him if I saw him again (I have two daughters - neither of whom had him as a teacher, as I am in the Beaverton School District, not Portland).

Is this normal? I have a meeting with my kid's principal this week on something not related to this, and am going to ask him about the rules in the BSD.

These are the types of things they don't tell parents, and I suggest that any of you who have children find out about the teachers contracts.

I'm sure the fine administrators in Portland will lambaste you for criticizing his alternative lifestyle and call you a nazi

Should I ask what is in your contract as to disciplinary action?

So do not worry about what is in mine.

It's too expensive to fire a tenured teacher because of unions. Some cities use 'rubber rooms'. It protects the kids but it's also expensive since you're paying them to do nothing.

Funny you should start this thread. I just met with my children's headmaster yesterday, as the school just implemented a policy of background check for parents if they want to coach youth sports or chaperone field trips. I am opposed to the idea.

All teachers and faculty are subject to background checks prior to start, and randomly through the year.

Random by the Police Department. That I have to go in and get printed on a hard card and electronically.

Did I say anything about disciplinary action?

If you don't want to know if your children's teachers are protected when they do this sort of stuff, that's your prerogative.

The Catholic Church model. Very effective.

I guess you do not get that I am a teacher and what is in my contract is none of your business. Just like your employment contract is none of my business.

I am a teacher and can tell you that this is not the case in Louisiana. He can resign before he is fired and our district wouldn't be able to officially state why he resigned from our district, but that wouldn't stop his arse being prosecuted and thrown in the pokey.

No, I would have to say teachers don't regularly get away with violating underage children. I mean, daily we have a thread on this site about a teacher getting busted for sexual encounters with students. I'm not going to call you a liar, because I don't know who or what you're talking about, but I find it hard to believe that a teacher could get away with that for 32 years.

I think that is everywhere. I know my district though can tell you if I was able to be reassigned within the district. Which is a good way to say no we never will hire them again even if we had nobody else to teach the subject.

I believe the code we use is, "He was given the opportunity to resign and accepted." The new school district knows that that means.
