"According to Richard Sherman, calling someone a "thug" is the same as calling someone a ni##er but acceptable."
Maybe, but it sure would damned convenient for him if this were true as it would shift the conversation from his personal conduct to broader issues of race. Hmmm.

Like somebody said earlier, Bieber is a thug. I actually think a better word for him is punk, but that's just me.
I think the Bieb should change his name to "Little Punk".

how about pompous jerk? I mean, a man who happens to be black can be criticized, right?
Calling him a dick would be very appropriate. Calling him a thug throws race into it.

Okay, so he acted like a dick. I can live with that.
Maybe somebody should put together a manual for acceptable language a member of one group can use when criticizing a member of another group. It could get tricky, though, because if we agree to stop saying thug, then the terms white trash and redneck probably need to be eliminated, too. Hopefully, that wouldn't be a deal killer.

i think "thug" has a specific meaning within the urban/AA community
but regardless, this is why i use "ratchet". that term is 100% urban/AA and describes what both that community and i intend it to mean

I think a good rule of thumb is to be nice to other people. Don't hurl out insults, and you will generally be ok.
And honestly most minorities are fine with statements made without being aware, assuming the statement was not made with mal intent. Just listen and remember. It really comes down to being polite, and sympathetic to others. While these skills are absent from this board, in general, I do believe they are relatively easy to acquire.

More like when the language police declare a word describing behavior to be "racist" in order to take attention away from the behavior.

That is actually a pretty racist perspective to have

I was walking out of Quik Trip today, and by the time I got to my car I heard two different people say the n-word. Both are black. How can they act like the word is so toxic, when they're addicted to it?
I don't know how those two guys you saw can act like the word is toxic to them.
When I was a young kid, a white guy refered to me and my sister as "little ****er's". How can yall be so cruel to children?
See what I did there? You heard this from two black guys and then questioned how all black people act like the word is so toxic and insinuated that all blacks are addicted to it. The truth is the majority of black people abhor the word just as the majority of white people don't say it.
But your question makes it seem that you think all black people are addicted to the word.
I'm not twisting anything you said, I'm just quoting it.

Actually, PurpleKnight, I think you are twisting my words a little bit. I never said that all black people use the n-word. But let's get real, many do. In the last 3 years, my job as a Project Manager has taken me into two work environments where the majority of the employees were black. I'm here to tell you, a lot of black people use the n-word. I even sat in on one training session with 5-6 young black males, which was being conducted by the company's HR Department, and the HR Rep had to end up threatening to write up anybody who continued to use the word.
I know all black people don't use the word, just like you and I both know that a lot of black people do say the word.
This is a subject that gets addressed quite often, and my perception is that the black community is divided over whether or not it's okay for black people to do this.

I think you put any derogatory word in the place of Thug and depending on how you use it, could have a racial tone to it. It is not the word that is racial, but more in the context and in the situation it is used.
Posted on 1/24/14 at 6:45 pm to JazzyJeff
What happened to the N word. Didn't know I had to replace it.

If that is true (I happen to agree with you) then why can't white people use the N word in public if the context in which they are using it is not meant to be derogatory.
For example, why can't I use the N word right now in this post instead of having to use "the N word"?
