Yes he is an American. BUT, he is the first president who holds a moral relativist view of the world.

So many "patriots" believe that being "American" means being exactly how they think things should be based on their own personal morals. Being American is the complete opposite of a single, defined belief. It's based on an ideal that every belief, value, moral, religion, etc is accepted when it doesn't infringe upon the rights of others.
