Trump might benefit himself by going slightly off topic, honestly. I’m worried ABC will give softballs and she may even have the questions beforehand (but I don’t really wanna go down the road of believing that just yet). He might have to take matters into his own hands, though I hope he does it sparingly.
Remember when he gave Biden shite about his golf swing and Biden took the bait? It was childish (but hilarious), however, if he can do something similar to Kamala on a more pressing matter, it could benefit him.
One of Trump’s things he does is tries to control the debate… he’s effective at it sometimes… he also does this thing where he’ll finish his answer from the previous question on the next question. It seems like he’s “off topic” but really, it just gives him the last word whenever he wants. Those things can be effective if he pulls them off without being sloppy.

Happened to dial over to CNN when they discussed muted mics. As expected, it was painted as Trump being problematic. If situation was reversed, Trump would again be the problem.

And he has to be A LOT better than his opponent for it to be recognized by anybody.
Again, those 7%ers who actually swing the election one way or the other? They don't watch debates. They might watch highlights or what someone says about the debates.
But that's wayyyyyy too many missed TikTok videos to sit through an entire debate for.
