IS "SATELLITE RECEPTION" *really* the basis for Internet, TV, and "Global Communications"?

Haven't we all been told (without question) that Global Internet & TV "communications receptions" are "Satellites-based"?

The Truth of the matter:

Undersea cables provide OVER 99% of the Internet Traffic for the entire world.

WATCH: How a Few Undersea Cables Connect the Entire Internet

(This might explain why phone and internet comm is dicey or even non-existent in vast areas of the word/realm -- especially the South Pacific).

So what of about those thousands of supposed "Satellites" circling the earth?

Are you high? No one thinks their internet comes from satellites. Unless you have Hughes net, I think it's called.

No, at least not the sole basis. Who is saying that?

Satellites are up there for lots of reasons. Public communications, satellite radio, and television are a very small part of it. Besides, a huge portion of satellites put up by governments for "communications" are spy/intelligence satellites--I thought everyone knew that.

I guess when my Sirius radio goes out, it is not because I drove through a tunnel, it is because a giant squid got tied up in the undersea cables. Good to know.

I don't think anyone disputes that undersea cables are an enormous part of communications on earth. What exactly is your question here? No one is saying that every satellite up there is for internet or television.

Undersea cables, OR <---> land-based antennae bouncing signal <---> one relay antenna to the next.

Look at all those terminations in Frankfurt, right where the CIA shot up the secret data center to retrieve the Dominion servers..

Wait until you find out how the NSA was tapping the cables when they came ashore in San Francisco and how submarines tapping Russian military undersea cables was a part of the Cold War.

Yeah, because 99% is JUST "enormous".

YOU seem to be the one asking the question.

All of the above, as well as bouncing off satellites.

Different subject but kind of related in what people think. I once had a remote spot up in Choctaw County. Horrible phone coverage and I had to use DISH for tv. Back then the receiver had a smart card. I had trouble with it so I called DISH but had to drive up the road 1/2 mile or so. Was talking to support, told her the symptoms and told here I thought I needed a new smart card. She said do this and this to the TV and I explained, I am not in front of the tv that I had to drive 1/2 mile to get phone service. She "well no wonder you can't get satellite if you don't have phone service". Even I knew of the Clarke rotation of satellites 22,000 miles in the sky. She finally sent me a new smart card.

Ok, what word would you use? Undersea cables constitute the overwhelming share of communications on earth. Better?

Who told you that satellites were the basis for all communications on earth? I have never seen that statement anywhere, but it seems to be the implication of your OP.

TV, yes. Go check out your local cable co. headend. Those dishes are not out there for decoration. More is moving to being sent via internet, but there is still a lot beamed down from Sats.

Internet/telephone not so much. Mostly long haul fiber.
