#1: With Europe landing on a comet it is great to see the rest of the world stepping up. To space we are one. We should all share the costs of exploring it. I am not embarrassed by this.
#2: As a country we have decided our priorities are entitlement based and not space. I am embarrassed by this.

Science in general is underfunded.

No NASA has performed it's mission as a propaganda/disinformation machine fairly well

NDGT gave a few great lectures on this topic. He basically stated that man has 3 great drivers to do things like frontier exploration. 1) do it for god 2) do it for money 3) do it for war. Privatizing space exploration would be pointless. Private companies will go into space operations when there is a profit to be made and not before that. SpaceX has a few different services they can provide in space operations, like resupplying ISS. However, exploration of space will never be a privatized endeavor. And just for a frame of reference...SpaceX took private citizens into "space" a little while back and what they called "space" was about far away as a 4hr car ride. Orion was 3600mi from earth and it was just a short test flight. We started NASA because of the war driver and once that was gone we started slicing up NASA's budget and we also closed down the SuperConducting Super Collider we were in the process of building in the late 80s. Sidenote, we'd would've found the Higgs long before CERN had we kept with it. NASA's budget is 1 half of 1 percent of government spending. So yes, im embarassed at how underfunded NASA is.

If you want to spend all of your money on entitlements then you cannot afford space programs

You do realize that NASA conducts a lot more science than just space exploration right?

By what? Uniting the nation towards a common goal that advances us as a species that didn't take a god damn catastrophe to do?

It will improve.
There was a thread about the launch earlier today. A friend is a major player in its development. We were discussing this launch and future plans recently. This launch is one of several test flights prior to a manned Mars Mission in the future. They are working on so many new things within this project. I think (and hope) we will see some new and exciting technology yielded from this project.

I DGAF. If privates want to do it with their money, great. Make yourself proud with your own money.

The benefit of the space program, from a tax payer perspective, certainly isn't just pride. The end destination (Mars in the case of SLS/Orion) is a great goal that I would love to see us achieve, however, the technological advancements made in the process of getting there are the biggest immediate benefit.

1. In 1969 if anyone had said "Mail delivery can go private" they would have laughed at you."
2. We don't know what would have happened if space had been private 20 or 30 years ago. But I trust private more than govt.
3. NASA is a POS. They are responsible for the faked data starting the GW hoax. NASA should be shut down.
Damn Zach - never go full retard!!
1. UPS and FedEx still don't "deliver the mail'
2. Yes we do. If NASA had disappeared 30 years ago, there would be no space station.
3. NASA has been directed by politics in this admin. They should not be in the GW debate nor should they have a 'Muslim Outreach' agenda.
NASA is one of the most worthy govt civil activities of all time. I am proud of my 30+ years service with them. Some of the happiest times of my life were spent with some of the most intelligent and dedicated people on earth during the early days of the space program. Nothing was beyond our grasp as a nation at that time. This was one government program where 99% of the govt empolyees were absolutely outstanding in terms of character, intelligence, dedication, qualification, work ethic. I am proud to have been in their association.
This Orion project is the first manned space program our nation has implemented that I had no connection to. I am excited - and hope to live long enough to see it happen.
I agree that NASA's mission now is not what it should be. The fix is not to shut down NASA but to return it to its proper mission.

And this is what we call 'An Unsupported Assertion.' Here is another term for it "CBA"... Cost Benefit Analysis.

NASA, under the most conservative of estimates, is estimated to have paid itself back in a 7 to 1 ratio. Under the most liberal, it's hundreds of times over. Just about every major piece of technology these days can likely be traced back to the Apollo missions when they tried to miniaturize machines these astronauts needed on board to keep them alive, but also small enough to get off the Earth. Your point about money is moot and absolutely retarded. No telling what kind of new goodies we'll get by going to Mars. It's going to pay off, and big.

But NASA's doing that right now, whether you know it or not. Why wouldn't the biggest journey in the history of mankind accelerate this?

You want to not spend a public dime on space exploration.
