it's 2019, and i'm just now learning (not from this thread) there were free blacks in the south that owned blacked slaves. Kind of an important note that people that think like you have been able to hold out.

To the OP: Only thing I remember from TX history in 7th grade regarding slavery was the Ponce de Leons negro slave Esteban was the first in the Americas.

Well, Esteban was Moroccan, so it is unlikely that he was a “negro.” Probably a Berber.

Interesting how we automatically equate slavery in the Americas with “negros” from West Africa.
