The first legal Slave owner in American history was a Black tobacco farmer named Anthony Johnson.
• North Carolina’s largest Slave holder in 1860 was a Black plantation owner named William Ellison.
• American Indians owned thousands of Black Slaves.
• In 1830 there were 3,775 free Black people who owned 12,740 Black Slaves.
• Many Black Slaves were allowed to hold jobs, own businesses and own real estate.

This would be the biggest issue about deciding who is eligible for reparations. How can you collect if you were a slave owner? Shouldn’t you have to forfeit you portion to someone who was not a slave owner?

There would be no way to separate all that but if you go with any % of “black” it gets even murkier. My great, great grandfather was 100% sub-Saharan African. Do I qualify for reparations?

I haven’t read the entire thread to see if this has been debated, but it can’t be true. The Spanish had African slaves here in the 16th century. The Dutch sold slaves to the Jamestown colonists in 1619, which had been widely regarded as the first slave ownership in colonial America.

If we absolutely should not be discussing slavery in 2019, why must we have those hideous statues of those that died defending it?

We should not forget the past, lest we continue to repeat it!
