We do have a Trade Deficit with Canada, as we do with almost all countries (some of them massive). P.M. Justin Trudeau of Canada, a very good guy, doesn’t like saying that Canada has a Surplus vs. the U.S.(negotiating), but they do...they almost all do...and that’s how I know!

And Now Trump as expected, is doubling down on the lie.

Tell me why this should upset me.

They almost all do! Therefore Canada must! And since that FEELS true to me, there's nothing wrong with me asserting it as fact in a meeting with a fellow world leader despite my complete ignorance of the matter!

From your own Bloomberg article:

quote:

Since it’s the Trump administration crying foul, Canadian officials say it’s only fair to use the U.S. government’s own assessment of trade imbalances.

“Canada does not see trade balances as a useful measure of the benefits of trade, but since the U.S. does, we’re using their own data that clearly states the United States has a trade surplus with Canada,” Adam Austen, a spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, said in an emailed statement.

Yes.

No. That's laughable.

Any discussion of production in the economy includes "goods and services" as the output metric.

See BEA's definition of GDP:
quote:

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the value of the goods and services produced by the nation’s economy
less the value of the goods and services used up in production.

See also their concept of net exports:
quote:

GDP is also equal to the sum of personal
consumption expenditures, gross private domestic investment, net exports of goods and services, and government consumption expenditures and gross investment.

This should be the main takeaway from the linked article in the OP.

Why? The meeting was to discuss the trade imbalance involving goods like aluminum and steel. They weren't there to discuss consulting services.

Then maybe he shouldn't say we have a trade deficit, because that has an actual definition. And it's not whatever adhoc definition he finds convenient.

Post the quote in the article where Trump and Trudeau were talking about steel and aluminum.

I don't think it should. Maybe if you put stock in what Trump says, it might demonstrate his willingness to say things without any regard whatsoever for their truth or accuracy, and that might bother some.

See this is my issue. We are sitting here arguing over what what types of trade should be included and shite, all the while world leaders are looking at this and understanding that Trump is completely ignorant on the matter and just saying things because of "intuition"

Where's the line between being upset and being "bothered"?

So now we just have SDVTiger and LsuRussian just trolling people rather than trying to defend the lie Trump just tweeted.
