Foreigners seeking visas to live in the U.S. might be rejected if they have certain medical conditions, including diabetes or obesity, under a directive issued last week by the Trump administration.

The guidance, issued in a cable the State Department sent to embassy and consular officials and examined by KFF Health News, directs visa officers to deem applicants ineligible to enter the U.S. for several new reasons, including age or the likelihood they might rely on public benefits.

The guidance says that such people could become a "public charge" — a potential drain on U.S. resources — because of their health issues or age.

As much as I criticize Trump, this is something that is sensible public policy that should have been in place for decades.

And as an ancillary benefit it may do their countries of origin some good as well

If people want to come here they know that they need to get in shape

Smart. We have way too many obese people here already. They are a drain on society.

Because someone in gov can make a buck, or owes a favor to donors who give to them and themselves can make a buck, we'll likely never get sane, reasonable action on this sort of thing in our lifetime. Or any lifetime.

Excuses will be made, exceptions will be offered, and the 'have a heart' crowd will press the issue to the point that no one would dare deny care to ( insert pathetic, cute, miserable sad case here) it's all a moot point.

This is what universal healthcare countries do.

You can’t just move to Australia when you have cancer and get free healthcare.

This might sound harsh but we really need a moratorium on legal immigration. At least 10 years.

It was at one point. You had to be healthy, of working age, have money in a bank account, and a REAL sponsor, who could be held liable if you got into mischief.

We have gone so far astray to protect the mythical rights of illegals. Its the reason their hubris regarding our laws is at this place now.

The ignorant masses believe everyone who got off a boat at Ellis Island was allowed in. That simply is not the case.

Anyone who was sick or had no ability to make a living was sent back, and that number was fairly high at times.

This used to be common policy in immigration. We checked them for STDs, diseases, etc. Even wouldn’t accept pregnant women to avoid anchor babies
