re: I’m tired of hearing Spanish every day in America

First 25 years of living in my corner of Texas, and hearing any foreign language in public was such an exceptional rarity, one would automatically turn a glance out of surprise or curiosity.
Texas-2025, I go out in public to local stores and such, and nearly 50% of the voices I hear are foreign. Absolutely insane. I've even started getting 'live' telemarketing phone-calls completely in Spanish the past few months. Several times a week. What the hell?
Yep, the America I grew up in and lived well into adulthood is gone, and has been replaced in a few short years by a trashy, foreign third-world. Doesn't even seem like a real, legitimate country anymore. More like an economic-zone of disparate transients. I don't even bother putting my flag up anymore, because it's such a joke to do so under these circumstances.
Oh, and to the people and politicians responsible for this 'transformation' of our once-great nation, I truly hope they all rot in hell.

People have always succeeded in assimilating by speaking the language of the majority. I'm Cajun and people consider that French. But the Cajuns occupied an area already settled by the Spanish (New Iberia). They intermarried and the children spoke French because they were in the majority. About 20% of my HS graduating class had Spanish surnames. We all spoke English but grandparents spoke French including grandma Dartez, Rodiquez and Garcia.

Been there, done that. We gave most of it back to them, though.

I think it’s funny when people from Louisiana talk about how other people need to learn English lol.

I’m totally with you on this. I love how this bothers people.
My question is….why do Americans insist on being so incredibly stupid when it comes to foreign languages?
I spent 18 years overseas and experienced various multilingual situations depending on the culture. For example, when I was in Japan, people would approach you on the train to practice their English. It never bothered me as I enjoyed visiting with people.
Here in America, I’ve asked Mexicans if they experienced the same phenomenon and they said very rarely. If so many Mexicans live in the US, why aren’t more people challenging themselves to pick up a second language? Such a great opportunity to expand their depth of knowledge instead of complaining about the depth of others. It’s apparently not that hard to learn.

I grew up in San Antonio, hearing Spanish never bothered me.

I haven't read the thread.
Have any populists proposed making speaking Spanish in the U.S. illegal yet?
If not yet, don't worry. They'll get there eventually.

How long has it been since it was a part of Mexico monkey-nuts? A few years? Actually not far from hitting 200 years so guess what? The muchacho's lost the war, time to stay on the other side.

Do you support any immigration? If so, where from?
MAGA is in for a rude awakening, its your white women fricking up the country, not Mexican laborers.

There it is. It’s our duty to learn Spanish!

I have spoken Spanish since childhood, because it is a handy skill to have.
I can also do basic plumbing and electrical work. No one made me learn those skills, either. They are just handy to have.

A colleague from the Valley complained about the Asian girls speaking chinese or Vietnamese at the nail salon.
He and his wife felt like they were the unwitting subject of the conversation.

Great post. That’s what I was getting at.
Plus, the original poster is incredibly naive. When you live overseas and you hang out with your American, Canadian, Aussie and European friends, do you seriously think we’re all going to be conversing in Thai or Vietnamese or Korean?
Give me a break.

Do Filipinos speaking their language to each other while in this country bother you?
