Are you still arguing than skin itself is the difference? All three of those countries have different cultures. Very difficult in the case of the Irish.

And how do you explain Asian, Middle Eastern, and African cultures who migrated in the early 20th century who assimilated?

The issue is that we dont enforce assimilation. Back then, you either assimilated or your family went hungry. You pushed your kids because that was the only way youd be socially mobile.

I think English literacy should be a requirement for Citizenship in the US.

Your beef isn't with language, then. It's with Democracy.

We've all had classmates who were Mexican and speak normal English back in the day but all they do is speak Spanish at home...Parents been here 25 years, don't know a lick of English.

Always bothered me, how do you not pick it up unless you choose to not assimilate and just hang out with your compadres and Mexican community that lets you get by not learning English even by accident.

It's really difficult to not learn basics of English living here for 25 years unless you have no desire to assimilate or you just don't care...because you get by surrounded by like-minded families in neighborhoods that are just a Mexican transplant neighborhood but now in America.

It's really shameful because European immigrants after WWII were forced to learn English and you were made fun of in class if you couldn't speak English (now classes are taught by bilingual teachers who have to repeat instructions twice, once in English and then Spanish) and employers required you to take night classes to learn English so you weren't a liability on the job.

But OP is right...the immigrants have little schooling now and a ton might be illiterate in their own language. There's a reason they're crossing the border. Nobody will hire them in Mexico.
