The WHO doesn’t exist without the US. If it doesn’t serve even the world’s interests (forget our interests), there’s zero logical argument for continuing it.
Given the likelihood of the next pandemic originating in China again, I’m not sure why we’d put any trust in how the WHO will address any future China issues. Why would you invest significant money into an organization that is biased to failure at its most important task?

Yep. This is exactly what I see as getting hashed out from now until election.
Since we've got a state-by-state approach to this going on, states will start coming off quarantines to crank the economies back up. Several countries have already gone off quarantines only to go back on.
We don't have an economic growth model to buffer this sort of thing well. It'll be a volatile political situation.

Yes. Who failed us on this, but I think it's because China has actually been playing a smart international game in co-opting it as they're co-opting other international organizations that we're neglecting to co-opt.
I disagree with that. There's a lot of international anger at them at the moment - and the U.S. isn't even remotely the most vigorous - and sending a pitiable quantity of defect supplies isn't doing them any favors, either.

yeah and it's not just an American problem so even if we had 0 cases, we would be in economic shambles right now
also a potential second wave in the fall could hit right as election season is in full gear

100 - 200 thousand was the number put out by the Presidential Task Force
Genius strategy!
Just think how good he'll look when it's a fraction of that!
Genius strategy...perfect...it was perfect.

If you could give the WHO teeth to shut down wet-markets & reliably report back what pathology is coming out of the country it would be massively helpful, but making that argument is a wee bit politically problematic because the base Republican voter equates international organizations with the Illuminati these days.

this is less realistic than my rhetorical question asking if declaring war on China would have cost the US less
this is the same as the alleged intel reports from China in January. the frick are we going to do when the world is buying their bullshite? war?
if you think China is allowing an outside force to come in and legit regulate an area that makes it look bad, i don't know what to tell you

again. the reality of this situation strengthens those beliefs. a worldwide organization being controlled by a "bad guy" whose intentional behavior fricked over the US/Trump? it's like a script for Trump fan fic

Globalism to serve national interests, baw.
You use them like you use arms inspectors. Consider trade & sanctions regimes for the muscle.

The problem here is the left will ALWAYS put their party over the country, no matter what.
Remember, this group of people were one day calling it the Wuhan Virus, then, within a week, it was "racist" to call it anything else. Their LCD voters swallowed this line and ran with it.
That is just one of MANY hypocritical sides these people have taken. It won't matter. They will lie and believe the lie. Doesn't matter if the very minute before they said the complete opposite.

What do you mean by this: "plus continuing attempts to shape the electorate favorably"?
Posted on 4/7/20 at 11:38 am to SlowFlowPro
The world is getting and staying more globalized. There is no going back. If we don't create means of reducing pandemic risks, we will blow up each others economies and increasingly go to war with each other.
We can and should have better national resources to keep ourselves at risk from this, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't be creating international institutions to do it. Others countries are almost as angry as we are about it and with international solidarity, we could possibly get wet markets regulated.
But to the messaging. Trump is rhetorically big and bad by calling this a "china virus", but what is he really arguing we should do about it?
Kicking WHO's arse is not going to do a whit of good except get baws on the internet erect.

making it harder for people to vote (see yesterday's Supreme court decision, etc.)

What a fricking stupid thing to say.
How about the fact that WHO, along with China, lied as late as February about what was going on. How about WHO being an organization that called Trump a racist for his travel ban.
What about normal people like me who see that shite and don't trust these groups?
But yeah, let's go ahead and soften their lies because you hate other Americans more than you hate our actual enemies.

Crawling into the fetal position on the world stage will not help us.
I DGAF if the WHO is dissolved, but true leadership will be developing the capacity to say with confidence what microbes are being born there because as sure as shite they can/will make their way here.
Do you trust Donald fricking Trump to lead like that?
