Liberals see government as "the great equalizer," the ultimate tool for spreading equity and fairness. It may seem somewhat paradoxical, but they also desire a ruling class of royalty to run their strong, centralized government. It's not all that strange once you understand their mindset though.
They romanticize royalty, they see it as representations of chivalry, nobility, wisdom, etc. Only some group whose very birthright was to be so very wise and noble could lead such a fair and just government.
It's why they tried so hard to make the Kennedys into American royalty, why Obama got a Nobel even though he hadn't made anything close to a worthwhile contribution to the world. It's why they praised Hillary as being "one of the smartest women in the world." And it's why they've quickly moved to act like the Biden tenure in the White House never existed.
