We were minesweeping the Strait and blockading Iranian ports. I am not sure how the Iranians have any control over the Strait other than threat right now.

Apparently they all along had a good many of them motorboats that when piloted by a nutcase Islamic extremist, even with relatively nominal weaponry, can be a legitimate threat. Especially if they swarm your arse. They apparently had a nice flock of them stored “underground.” So the mere threat of that, whether completely accurate or not, combined with sitting back and letting everyone else believe the strait is chock full of mines for which only they know the exact locations (again, even just the threat or “fear” of that is enough to have a certain level of “strength”.
