The size of the federal government was intentionally expanded starting Day 1 of the Obama administration, ostensibly to balance the employment fallout from 2008. It’s time to finally undo this.

We need 5 million agents

2.3 million?!?
According to Kristi Noem, DHS has roughly 10 percent of that number that will be working without pay during the shutdown

The Feds have not hired the best and most altruistic people to run the government. It could be argued that most of the 2.3 million petty functionaries are the real threats to the livelihoods of the 342 million approximate inhabitants.

Active military is 1.3 .million of that and 926 billion of the budget. I'm former army and so pro military. But time to cut.

Active alone is 1.3. Doesn't consider reserve and national guards.

The OP said 2.3 million CIVILIAN. Not military. The military would add to that

shite. That's right. The military has almost 800 thousand civilian employees, the postal service over 600. Homeland security now over 200. Unbelievable

There are 258 million adults in US. That's basically 1 fed employee per 100 people, aside from state and local government employees. That's not financially sustainable.

I don’t believe we should have national forest either
Or any government owned land

Much of that is civilian DOD, which is the largest employer in the U.S.

Based on data from March 2025, the cabinet departments with the most civilian employees are:
Department of Defense: 770,900 employees
Department of Veterans Affairs: 433,700 employees (as of 2023)
Department of Homeland Security: 212,000 employees (as of 2023)

The real budget issues we face are much larger than this spending.
I'm not advocating for maintaining as large of a federal employment level as we have, but framing it in terms of spending/budget is a distraction from looking at the real spending cuts we need to make.

Add in al the consultant contractors and you can double that.

I'm one of these and there is some fat to be trimmed for sure. However I think the majority of these jobs need to stay. A lot of them are experts in their fields and offer the continuity that is lacking the military.
