Tell me, what workload is Meta dedicating to which data center this week? You do understand that a data center with workload doing gene research (oh no! AI!) can be doing face matching on your stupid back to school pictures for your kid next week, right?

Go ahead and pick apart which Digital Realty DCs that serve Microsoft, NVidia, HPE, Oracle, AWS, IBM and Google Cloud are using "AI." What about video game streaming from Nvidia and Microsoft (Xbox) are packed with GPUs and pulling hella power, and what data centers Google cloud is using, on which their customers provision AI workloads to, basically without Google telling them to put them into a specific DC, and get back to us.

They are completely different things.
The data centers for servers and such we have now use CPUS. They are passive store and retriveal. They aren't doing anything until you make a request to the cloud.
AI data centers are an active computing engine running constantly with billions of data points to learn patterns. They use GPUs interconnected and running together and they run at 100% of weeks at a time.
They amount of cooling needed for a traditional server farm is just AC. With data center you need advanced liquid cooling centers and high-voltage power grids to deal with the heat.
They are not a like at all.

You know you can run AI locally on your own computer without having to use the data centers? That is just a convenience they provide for people.

I've been a full stack web developer for almost 30 years, and I play around with AI as a hobby. I think I might know a thing or 2 about this topic.
As I pointed out, they are doing much less.
You say millions of people as if it's significant. Most of them are simple data retrievals, maybe some database adds. A normal request takes less than 1 second on a CPU and requires very little RAM. I have multiple co-located servers and they do not run at 100% basically ever. If they did for a significant amount of time, I'd need to upgrade them.
Meanwhile AI is crunching BILLIONS of data points every second for weeks at a time. And not on CPU's, on GPUs.
The heat and cooling requirements pretty much tell the story.
I have no idea what the "Tech" in your name stands for.

The fact that people have only just begun complaining about data centers in the last couple of years is pretty strong evidence that it’s not the data centers that they are actually upset about; it’s the AI.
The data center is just the only part of the AI production process that a local municipality has any control over. So it’s the fight that average people actually have the capacity to wage.
