I disagree. For the average shooter in a high pressure situation I think the shotgun would be the better option. There are options that can give you plenty of rounds (not as many as an ar maybe, but still enough). You are more than likely only going to get a few off one way or the other. Either you lost, they are done, or you scared them off.

I have. Guess how I know that you haven't.

If you were actually concerned about protecting your family...a shotgun would do a better job.

snowflake.

AR's are not going to get banned but just in case, get you one. I imagine every time this type of shooting happens, the sale of AR's go through the roof because of that "just in case" thinking. You'll love the rifle.

Only if: Since you have never owned a gun then you need to enroll your wife and you in a self defense, conceal carry enhance carry type class because if you don't know how to use it, I would rather not live in the same town as you.

Go with a Smith and Wesson M&P10. Larger round and will shoot farther more accurately.

1. because the air force has zero ground units. I guess you have never seen an airforce jtac in your world

2. it was half a joke, but I would still prefer (personally) the shotgun in a lot of cases.

but carry on

AR 15 for home defense = bad idea
9mm Glock or Ruger or a Beretta handgun = good idea

AR15 is good for the Zombie Apocalypse, but incredibly impractical for home defense...especially inside the house

1. I've worked with TACPs. Are you a TACP?

2. It wasn't a good joke, and you deserve ridicule for it.

1. then why would assume that "USAF" meant I had never handled a firearm? I was EOD attached to army units for most of my career, then switched to intel once I got tired of sand. Now I'm a free man. Anymore questions?

2. I liked my joke.

That's my setup, although thinking of getting a shotgun as well for home defense. The ar is great for sport shooting and pig hunting
