It's the Most clear-cut case of self-defense there ever was on video.
It doesn't matter that he threw some chick to the ground 15 minutes earlier. He had disengaged from the conflict and was retreating. You've can't follow up by smashing him in the head with a skateboard, yelling I'm going to kill you and stab him in the back with a knife. His Original Sin was shoving someone to the ground. In self-defense there is the concept of proportionality.

The shooter was definitely physically assaulting women and should absolutely be charged for that.
I saw one article that says because of that the citizens were "within their right to detain him" but it didn't point out that they weren't trying to detain him, they were beating him with a skateboard.
