My FIL was 2nd in charge of a Jewish family owned business here in town so I got to know them pretty well. It's uncanny how this family is straight out of central casting. Grandfather came over on a boat from Europe & started the business & became successful through working himself to death. Father was the ultimate penny pincher. He was the stereotype who couldn't live with himself if he didn't pick uo a penny off the ground. Mother is loud over-bearing & in complete control of the family. She's made one son a complete neurotic basketcase. He's like an unfunny George Costanza or the son from Arrested Develpment. Other son is a total narcissistic a-hole. He reminds me of Adam Sandler from Uncut Gems.

I know all Jews don't fit this mold, but it's always been hilarious to me how this family in paticular reinforced all the stereotypes.

LINK back in early 1900's there were a lot of russian jews coming into the country. so many, they thought it would cause anti-semitism. so jacob sciff organized a plan to send them into the country through galveston. more than 10,000 came through galveston. when i was a kid in east texas, my family would drive over to tyler to a department store to shop. named meyer and schmidts. i wonder if they had come in through galveston and been set up in business in tyler.

i mean this with all due respect, it just means that you're in the income spectrum that's not likely to mingle with jews. which is to say poor white trash. remember i said with all due respect.

This is a very good point. Lots of non-practicing or now converted to Christianity ethnic Jews in the south.

After my parents' divorce, dad (a devoutly religious Christian his entire life) eventually married a practicing Jew. This is in OKC, late 70's. They had a Jewish wedding. Stepmom has a large Jewish family. I've been to several bar mitzvahs and bat mitzvahs. I can recite the Shabbat Dinner prayers from memory. Sudden immersion into the Jewish culture when I was young. Dad and stepmom eventually attended a Messianic Jewish congregation which let to starting their own Messianic Jewish congregation which now has around 500 in their congregation. He basically converted my stepmom to Christianity in the process. I guess it was a compromise but both sides of the family had problems with it, hers much more so. They follow all the Jewish calendar holidays, but also believe that Christ is the true Messiah. Me being an unreligious person, noped out of all of it around 16 or 17 years of age.

You have probably met many. They don't all have big noses.

Well, Dick, is that your name or just what everyone calls you? If you are a representative of those who mingle with these Jews you are referring to, then I should consider myself fortunate. My guess is that you are merely tolerated by them. No offense, Dick.

For context: mid 50’s and have always lived in Alabama. I know this is not a hotbed for Jews, but is it unusual that I’ve never known ANY?

Not really if you grew up in say Maplesville or Vida . Alabama Jews are well entrenched in Birmingham and Mobile.

My father was Conservative Jew and Mother Southern Baptist from a small town in middle of state. They I’m sure had never met a Jew until their daughter married one.

Growing up in Mobile, in 50’s and 60’s , I experienced anti semitism and hate. I specifically remember in 4 th grade a boy ( he was the class bully), calling me a dirty Jew and Christ killer. You can imagine how that shaped my outlook. But I will say the vast majority of my fellow students treated me well and were my friends.

I learned from that experience that hate originates from ignorance.

Have a good day and try and meet a Jew or two. They won’t bite you

I don’t have anything against Jews, I was just wondering if it was unusual that I didn’t personally know any. The recent revival of anti semitism is alarming.

It’s a little unusual. My Louisiana town of about 15 - 20,000 people had a couple of Jewish families. The daughters went to my high school.
We even had a Jewish police seargent…
There are prominent Jews in New Orleans, of course, along with Italians, Greeks, Irish and Asians

I'm sure there might of been a few in my High School, but no one ever cared or even worried about it.

Now, We have some Missouri conservatives trying to pass a law to protect jewish students from hate, errrrrrrr any criticism. Calling it a hate crime bill.

And people think it's ok that the Jews run our Government

thanks for proving my point jethro and remember i said with all due respect.i bet you don't know many catholics either.

i was two when my dad got transferred to hope arkansas, it's just a backwater schit stain in south arkansas from little rock. a woman in the auxiliary junior league (that's a lady's group) proudly told my mother that hope didn't have any jews, my mother immediately responded, "yes i noticed that as you don't any decent department stores!"

in the south the pecking order of society is this,

white protestant (episcopal or presbyterians)
white protestants (all other)
white catholic
white jewish
blacks
and then white trash

the reason white trash is at the bottom is because you were born with the huge advantage of being born white and did nothing with it.

have a nice day!

Many jews relocated to the South to escape persecution up North. They started using Southern sounding names and acting like Southerners and the next thing you know, they were Southerners. Some Southerners are descended from Jews and don't realize it. Nor does it matter.

Arkansas is a glorified welfare state of Walmart.

You people don’t speak for the South.

Guessing you don’t live in Bham? We have two temples near us and several community centers. Half my run group is Jewish and the other half is Catholic.
