I am amazed that people actually think our discourse was respectful before trump arrived

It is willful ignorance to think people treated the other side respectfully in previous years and political cycles

Was John Kerry treated decently by republicans in 2004?

Was George bush treated decently by dems?

Was Romney? Was obama? Was McCain?

You can argue that trump is not respectful against his political nemeses

But do not EVEN TRY TO ARGUE that vitriol did not exist before trump

We had ads blaming dems for willie horton’s raping spree and ads blaming republicans for causing cancer

The last election where there was respectfulness was probably 1996....because everyone knew it was merely a formality with a foregone conclusion

When toddy was acting like an a-hole during the Obama years he said “by any means necessary” now he’s whining about decorum. What a fricking joke.

Is there really some big group of people claiming that political discourse has only now become bitter?

The way I see it when you call everyone that disagrees with you racist for decades on end with nothing to back that claim up you can't get pissed when people aren't civil to you in return.

It’s deeper than that. Those same people treat opposing beliefs as if they should not even be heard. And when they are they melt about “normalizing” people they hate.

Those people are so absolutely ate up with their own hubris they can’t smell farts in the wind.

Full time respectful discourse,is the seed of misunderstanding.

Downvote away,but It's the truth.

You should have certain principles that are untouchable. You should wear these on your sleeve.
Giving up,or moderating your stance on this principle,is not acceptable, and any approach, should be rejected with extreme reaction.

I’m too young to remember before bush but I’m pretty sure bush was called a nazi non stop. Then it got worse under obama. Now it’s even worse under trump. Part of the issue is that people don’t really realize how bad it is when they sometimes agree with the slurs. Obama supporters were more sensitive to the rights nonstop hate towards him, trump supporters are more sensitive (with good reason) towards the new hate. Not sure where this ends.

I don’t think politics was particularly respectful before.

I do think Donald has gone a few steps further than any major player prior and that’s been a green light for some regular folks (on both sides) to ramp up their behavior.

I do think there are still a fair amount of generally respectful folks out there though.

The problem is that the establishment republicans let the Dems run roughshod and allowed them to unchecked insults. Look at mittens for example. Democrats ran a campaign as if he was sexist and racist. Mitt Romney, the sexist

They are mad trump is beating them at their own game. And he’s murking them.

It may not have met your definition of respectful, but it was civil. This disrespect is both offensive and counterproductive, as you will find out in November and then again in November 2020. Please keep the good work up.

Of course it wasn't. But Trump, with the help of his simpletons, has bought it down to the gutter.

Who is arguing this?

The Dems called Lincoln a monkey.

This is as old as politics goes - in fact, it was worse back in the day.

Shite the South didn't even put Lincoln on the ballot.

And we talk about a coup today? The South tried to rig the 1860 election not just a few FBI people and CNN.

Can you imagine if the South didn't put Hillary Clinton on the ballot?

Or the Coasts didn't put Trump on the ballot?

I think it’s a matter of degrees. It has never been respectful in my lifetime, but the sheer amount of hyperbolic vitiolic rhetoric directed toward Trump and anyone who does not rush to condemn his every action from every single facebook user, newscaster, comedian, tv show, and talk show host is simply a whole new level. It is absolutely impossible to avoid. It was never this bad under Bush. You could at least watch most tv and never have to hear about politics. Now, there’s no escaping it.

For those who are, I’d like to introduce them to Messrs. Jefferson and Hamilton.
