I know the board tends to focus on federal politics, in which we can have a nominal participation. How involved are yall with issues that you actually can impact?

Federal policy seems so beyond my control that I sort of stopped paying attention to it. It's just frustrating that federal policy happens TO us without regard for the unwealthy. I understand that's capitalism so it is what it is.

Do y'all have an interest in your local governments? Do you do anything to involve yourself in real policy or do you prefer simply to opine?

None other than regularly voting.

Military personnel are not permitted to be involved in political campaigns.

My local government is the New York City and Manhattan politics aka if you're not a liberal Democrat, you get nothing.

Being from Louisiana, local politics are even more of a lost cause than federal policy. The demographics and general incompetence of our politicians make state and local issues mostly unbearable

Yes. I have volunteered to serve on a state congressional campaign.

Have been a Republican delegate to state convention. Have chaired numerous Republican committees on county level. Have been an election judge. Have been active in multiple state and local initiatives to gather supporting signatures. Have spoken before city councils. Have been asked to run for office (declined because I travel almost weekly). Have my congressman (Michael Burgess) in my contacts on my phone and I now act as a poll watcher for the Republicans.

The establishment has spent centuries creating a game you/me/we have no chance of winning. It would be like aspiring to pole vault over the high bar in a football game. It just isn't set up for it.

The establishment has brilliantly contrived a game it has convinced us we must all do our patriotic duty by participating in. A game in which the only way they win and we lose is if we keep playing.

It's like a poker game that I deal and control. The only way I win is if I convince you to keep playing. The moment you quit playing, I lose. I have nobody left to con.

Hope that answers your question.

I volunteered for Bush’s campaign when I interned for Bill Frist in DC in 2004 (basic door knocking, phonebanking, envelope stuffing). I also typically give between $500 and $1500 per cycle to various candidates (since 2008). That’s about it. I’m thinking about taking a sabbatical from work to get involved in the 2020 campaign unless there’s some congressional candidate that really impresses me enough to want to get involved in 2018.

Never really did anything at the local level. Haven’t lived in one place long enough as an adult to really care about local issues.

I am interested in political philosophy and American culture. I have no real interest in political process . The sausage almost makes itself- only the faces change . It’s all ego and hubris once it leaves the philosophical plane. I knew that shortly after graduation with a degree in International politics and law when I made the obligatory rounds in DC and elsewhere. I want no part of that . I view State and local similarly. That said, I have done some campaign work and obviously written some checks .

So I observe the culture because that’s what I really, really understand . And I am active locally in the culture- primarily as a parent-whether it is the local schools my kids attend, the arts scene my kids are a part of, my temple, whatever is happening at LSU etc.

From time to time I will assist with a political issue locally - but I have always found it painfully depressing.

I don't know. I live in the dysfunction capital of the USA (New Orleans) and I haven't given up yet.

I'm in regular contact with my council person's office. If you politely aggravate people enough, they roll over.

I give money to State and local candidates. When it comes to Sheriff and DA races I contribute to multiple candidates.
