Frankly, I think trump needs to temper the tariff talk.

i think you need to go dig up the threads we had here with ib a chinaman where we showed his dumbass we did not pay more for hardly anything here. we showed all the positives of the tariffs instead of getting raped non stop like we have been for decades with dumping and losing jobs.

Not with China. We saw what happened - they adjusted the yuan relative to the dollar in an effort to compensate for the tariffs instead of raising prices.

If they didn't raise prices then what was the benefit to American production?

Apparently this is a hard concept for a lot of people to understand.

Apparently you don't understand the concept of universal baseline tariffs, which is what Trump is proposing in his 2024 economic plan.

So we are not talking about tariffs on China only. We are talking about tariffs on all imports.

You watched the NBC Meet the Press interview with JD Vance.

Lady has no clue what tariffs do but kept reading from her notes telling her to keep repeating, "Tariffs will raise prices correct? Tariffs will raise prices."

As others have said, reciprocal tariffs will help keep and bring back manufacturing jobs to America. Do you want to keep saving $1.00 on underwear from China or pay $1.50 more for a better item, made in America that keeps your neighbor or family member employed with a roof over their head?

Without reciprocal tariffs the underwear will never even be made in America to give you a choice and after Covid, you should be begging to get our supply chains and manufacturing back to the US.

How you bring inflation down is yes, lower fuel prices, pump the hell out of natural gas, give the energy sector long term stable policy so they can invest, but also make the dollar stronger by having a tight monetary policy. Slashing regulations will also help.

The FED also has drawn out the inflation we have now by not raising interest rates even higher than they did but they were trying as much as possible to help Biden.

The math is simple. A 5% tariff means a 5% increase passed on to the consumer.

Why didn't the price of goods increase when Trump enacted tariffs during his term? The math may be simple, but apparently looking at past events is not.

It’s an incentive to produce more goods in the USA to make domestic products more competitive. Which provides jobs and tax revenue here At least that’s the way I see it.

Yeah and I agree that in principle. During non inflationary times, it makes a ton of sense. It is best for us longterm to expand the manufacturing base.

During inflationary times, raising tariffs like he’s talking, is like throwing gas on a fire.

So you agree with the lady that has no clue.

If you want to discuss what we're getting in exchange for the cost, fine. It may be worth it, but that doesn't change the fact that the consumer is paying more for the same good.

Not true. The cost of some things went way up but, because we were in a low inflation environment, it wasn’t felt the way it would be felt today.

No I didn’t

I watched cnbc yesterday and they talked about how tariffs, in an inflationary environment, would not bring down the cost of goods but would actually increase goods on those imports as the cost would be passed onto the consumer

The washing machine tariff resulted in Samsung making washing machines in South Carolina instead of Korea.
And the Trump tariffs applied to manufacturing in many countries - not just China. Countries that are not currency manipulators - so those manufacturers most likely either dealt with lower profit, increased productivity, and/or raised prices.

Yeah, but talking about China is more fun.

And nobody talks about what 10% across the board will mean for industries that are staring at a 20% disadvantage with other markets. We'll pay more and still won't get the benefit they see in helping American producers.

You realize a country with labor laws like our own, cannot fairly compete with slave labor?

Yes
I know of very well.
VERY well.

That is part of the reason why jobs have been lost in the US to lower cost countries who pay far lower wages.

In other words it raised prices on washing machines to the point that SC was competitive.

Basic math. How would we create the current tax revenue level via tariffs?

A consumption tax could

You make it more expensive to make goods outside the US vs manufacture inside the US. Couple this with a flat tax and shrink the bureaucracy by 50% and you have a functional federal government.
