I had a lot going on at the time and wasn't paying as much attention. How did those two clowns get the nomination? Sacrificial lambs? No good candidates? Didn't seem as bad then? Dumb luck? Seriously, what happened?

What happened with Biden this season, is what happened with McCain. In West Virginia, Romney was a thorn in the side of McCain, so everyone cut deals in that caucus to blow out Romney. McCain and Mike Huckabee cut a deal.

quote:

Romney entered the caucus with the most pledged convention-goers, but delegates for McCain defected to Huckabee.[2] In the first round of caucusing, the results were Romney 464, Huckabee 375, McCain 176, Paul 118, Giuliani 0. Since no candidate had a majority, Giuliani dropped out and the delegates took a second vote. At this second vote, most Paul and McCain supporters, reportedly acting on commands from their coordinators, shifted to Huckabee, ensuring him the majority.[3] As a result of a deal with Huckabee's camp, Paul's delegates swung to Huckabee in exchange for 3 of the State's 18 national delegates.

The West Virginia caucus was the first of the 21 "Super Tuesday" contests to be counted, with the results being reported in the mid-afternoon. Huckabee's win over the favored Romney was considered a major loss of momentum for Romney's campaign, while it revitalized Mike Huckabee's hopes for the nomination.

Too many repulican voters listening to the MSM advising to nominate an "electable" candidate who then they (the MSM) turned on in the general. It happens time and again.

The same way Alex Wright got to wrestle Ric Flair.

The booking committee needed someone to take a dive to get Obama over as a baby face.

The GOP has been next man up presidential cycle after presidential cycle since Nixon. That is if you finished second in the prior GOP primary 4 years earlier that usually meant that you were the front runner in the next GOP primary. This pattern held for a long time until Trump.

My thoughts at the time were that there was so much dissension with Bush and the War in Iraq and with the recession, coupled with the democrats putting up Barack Obama, that it was easier to put up a guy whose future career wouldn't destroyed by losing the election. Republicans weren't going to win in 2008, so why not put up a old guy who'd lost in the primaries prior.

They were mostly similar to the previous nominees that had come before them - George W. Bush, Bob Dole, George H.W. Bush. The better way to ask the question is why the Republican party went from that continuity to Donald Trump.

Yep. They know how to control it. The only real choice that year was Obama, McCain, or Romney. The electorate loses no matter what.

The words "low energy" were all that stood between us and President HRC. Thank God for branding.

McCain- This was following up on 4 years of Bush and a lot of people worried about putting up someone who would just be a 3rd term for Bush.

McCain, despite the way he is lumped in with Bush on this board as a RINO, was considered a maverick and the best option republicans had for putting up a change candidate.

Romney- Mostly because Rick Perry was a terrible candidate. There were a lot of low cards in that hand LINK
