He’s not. Trump could veto a bill that was passed 435-0 and 100-0. They can override the veto, it he can still do it to force the issue and make Congress go through the override process for something that’s broadly unpopular.

We're talking semantics here. Sending it back is simply a formality. Everyone already knows which way each congressman and senator voted. The only conceivable thing that would change such a huge difference would be some new major event that would cause them to completely change their minds.

It isnt about changing their minds. A Trump veto would bring the issue into the mainstream and force those who voted for it to actually articulate why they did so. Up to now, they have not provided any explanation and passed this thing intentionally outside of the public eye.

I don't like it one bit, but who could you vote for besides Trump, that has a chance of ensuring Kamala fricking Harris or the like isn't the defacto president?

Do you honestly believe that a bunch of senators would reverse their vote simply because they'll have to explain it? Do you believe that they hadn't thought of that before they voted?

I would love for him to veto it, but they passed it with a veto-proof majority. His veto would be more symbolic than anything.

No, and as I said, its not about changing their minds. They aren't going to do that.

Holding their feet to the fire for voting for an enormously unpopular bill gives Trump leverage over the GOP going forward on other issues. They need him to vocally support GOP candidates in the fall.

Politics is theater. I don't understand why he would sign the bill. Everyone who signed (Bush, Obama re-authorization) and or voted for it is on the wrong side of history on this. Vetoing it loses him nothing, and if nothing else will force Democrats to get on TV and start passionately defending the Patriot Act, which is an easy win for Trump.

I agree with all of this. I just won't be losing sleep over it if he signs it. Certainly won't be changing my vote over it.

Obama's renewl of the patriot act during his first term was the last straw for me being a democrat. The GOP should thank their lucky starts the progressive wing took over the democratic party.

I know it's not a realistic thought of mine, but the sooner people stop voting for the lesser of 2 evils like you mentioned and completely stopped voting for anyone they don't deem good enough, the better off we'd be.

There's a general thought that if you don't vote, that's on you and you don't get to complain. That's obviously true for those who simply don't care at all. But for those who do care and do their homework and decide there is no one worth a vote for, I feel they're doing more of a service for their country by not voting than someone who casts a vote for a person who they don't even like or really want to be President.

The Senators will not reverse their vote because the FBI has their internet history.

Kind of ironic.

I’m pretty sure they have the votes for a veto override so it doesn’t matter if Trump signs it or not.

It may not matter to the final outcome of the act, but it sure as shite matters to how one may view Trump if he signs off on this.

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but are you saying you're ok with giving up some of your freedom in order to go after Obama?

Man, I hope I'm misreading that.

You have a choice...vote for Democrats who will weaponize the FBI, CIA, DOJ, IRS, etc etc. Or vote for Trump because he might/might not sign the USA Freedom Act.

Which is worse?

I will be voting for Trump.

Those are not the only choices.
