Mainstreaming screwed up classrooms forever. Its made the teachers job that much more difficult managing so many levels of cognitive ability in one class.

Agreed. There's no human way for one single teacher in a classroom to well manage the differences in a way that serves all students.

But... feelings and whatnot.

And mainstreamed students usually require independent ILPs.

You're not getting it.

"Outstanding teachers" are irrelevant to the formula.
I completely get it. If you're saying we could put the worlds best teacher in front of those students and they wouldn't do any better... why put a great teacher there instead in front of high-potential students. Why put any teacher at all?

I realize it may seem harsh, but you are the one saying it's a lost cause.

Because we are committed to mass compulsory education.
But we aren't educating them. That's the point. Spending money != education if the students (by your own measure) aren't going to be educated.

It doesn’t. There probably needs to be something other than a generic metric, though.
Fair point.

I get the feeling waka would like to see an end to the compulsory part of education. I'm of the same mind.

All students can learn, you just have to know how to teach them.
I agree with this. But the bolded part should be rewarded, because clearly not everyone possesses it in equal amounts.

I guess I just don't get the theory that paying all teachers the same, means they will all produce the same result regardless of their student populations. That clearly isn't true.

So we focus on the marginal kids and those in the middle suffer.
Right. We somehow think it's terrible that low-potential students don't acheive their best potential (true!). But no one ever thinks about the middle and high-potential students that are denied acheiving their potential becuase the focus is on the low-performers. That is considered "equality!". Sick.

And the extra focus and resources spent on the lower achievers doesnt seem to be working.

Correct. There is a difference between methodology and knowledge. If you're very good at connecting with below average HS kids but you graduated from a crap college with a 2.6 in your major then you don't need to be teaching gifted kids.
If you graduated from a good college with a 4.0 in your major you'll never get a chance to convey 90% of the info you possess with a classroom full of illiterates.

Too bad they dont have any authority as a union because it's illegal for a teacher's union to exist in Texas....

they can be an organization, but have no bargaining rights, nor rights to strike.

I'd be nervous if half my class was IEP, 40% was ESL and I was judged on how I can get good test results out of that. Especially considering such wonderful programs aa least restrictive environment and restorative justice.

That should factor in. It should be based on progress and where the students start and finish.
