The GOP specifically campaigned for abolishing proxy voting and making the case that congressmen needed to vote in person. That it was important.
Yep.
Ok this and you'll have congressmen "voting" from their deathbeds.
Why do people continually ignore the slippery slope after so many examples.

Well if she can’t be there to vote, then she’s probably isn’t representing her district. If the voters are fine with that, great. Every time I see Luna do an interview, she’s in Florida. I never see her in DC doing an interview. I don’t think that’s acceptable. But again, I’m in the minority on this. I actually have standards.
This sounds like something El Gaucho would post.

When Gaucho does it, he's shitposting. Unfortunately, I don't think Riverside was. It was one of the dumber comments in the thread so far.

It’s pretty clear that folks here have never seen the Louisiana legislature in action
It’s appalling how many legislators are nowhere to be found while debates and voting are going on.

It’s pathetic that so many elected representatives just won’t show up. We should expect better.
Edit:
Just looked it up and Luna only voted on 69% of the bills in the last Congress. She missed 380 votes.
Voting Record: 69.4%Recorded Votes (861)Missed Votes (380)

She's hot, but she needs to show up to vote.

Do you want members to miss out on an important vote because they can't vote by proxy?
Yes.
In person voting, period.
While 'new parent' might seem reasonable and in line with family first conservative values, it will quickly turn into a shitshow of everyone that pleases to, proxy voting.
How is 'new parent' any more special than, say... dialysis or chemo treatment? Or maybe a 24hr tummy bug? Or a root canal? Facelift and tummy tuck? Migraine? Allergies? Kid home sick from school?

And she wants women to be able to do their jobs they were voted in to do even if they are stuck in a hospital bed.
What about men stuck in a hospital bed? What about people who's flight got canceled or who missed their train?
Birthing a child is by far the only reason a member can't be there to vote... if we make exceptions for one category, other categories will soon follow. Then, a short time thereafter... even more categories where it's not a person who 'can't, but a person that has some conflicting scheduling.. then a person who just doesn't want to show up.

Is that actually in the bill? Because the article says it is for pregnant mothers and their spouses. Not anyone that has poor health or wants to sit at home.
Pregnant mothers and spouses.
Why are they more special or deserving than any other person with a valid reason for not being able to show up?
No one chooses dialysis... she chose to have a baby.
She's asking for VERY special treatment... even white man McCain managed to drag his half dead arse in there for the infamous thumbs down vote on revoking the Obamacare act.

This isn't a bill to ask for WFH because they dont want to go into the office. This isn't a bill to let them vote at a later date just because it is inconvenient.
It will quickly become so. That's the problem. If she has to miss a few votes due to family concerns, if her constituents don't hold it against her no one else should.
Asking for special treatment opens the door to other special treatments.

Congressperson is no job for someone who is the mother of a little baby

Why not? The mothers in congress have the biggest balls in the group. They are the ones willing to fight the most.
I, for one, think the needs of the child outweigh the needs of politics. As they are both full time jobs, perhaps new mothers need to put their family first for a few years then go on to battle in politics once their children are a little older.

Most new mothers take 12 weeks of maternity leave
No, they don't. At least I don't think so.
Childbirth recovery should take no longer than a week for an uncomplicated birth or two or three weeks for a complicated one. I say this having had two c-sections.
If it's not about recovery but about childcare, daycares typically start at six weeks.

Agreed. Trump wanted gov employees back in the office. Why not these?

Luna’s measure is disgraceful. She needs to be voted out. Clearly she isn’t serious about being in Congress.
I mean, people can have opinions on what is important. While I agree this isnt to the top level I dont mind trying to work something out.

Simply because their only job is to show up and vote. It’s for pregnant women now. But why not cancer patients, or sick kids, or moms dying, or they’re getting transgender surgery. It’s a slippery slope. Show up and do your job. Or don’t and quit.
Slippery slope is not a real argument when each successive step down the slope needs consent from the body.
This is for pregnant women. It is not a significant population but it is the compassionate thing to do.

proxy voting by new mothers should be allowed and put a cap on it. first 6 months you can vote by proxy if you are a new mom. after that, nope.
republicans should take ownership of the pro family movement.

I mean this is a pretty rare thing. how many new moms are there in congress at any given time? 1 or 2? I think this should be an exception and republicans should be at the forefront of it. show the common sense they always talk about.
