“I am confident that none of you will want to be sending this budget to my desk for approval,” Edwards told the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget. “I don’t think it is possible to pass a budget, in fact, that makes cuts at this level.”

What a fricking shitheel.

You know he's required to propose a budget right? It's reflective of what it will look like if the sales tax is rolled back and other revenues not picked up.

Try me.

You know, I actually think we might eventually get somewhere with these continual budget issues. It is a now a foregone conclusion that every fiscal year will be some sort of senseless grab bag of new taxes, underhanded fees, and cuts to education and health care. I almost welcome the dysfunction and pain because it is never going away until we amend the state constitution.

Time to slash all non-essential spending and just try again. There is a working model immediately next door.

"Our window of opportunity continues to shrink every day," Edwards said. "The longer we wait, the more damage we cause."

Oh wait he isn't talking about shrinking government only those things that hurt the everyday person.

Next year.

He hasn't announced but he almost certainly will. He recently made some vague comments about looking into it.

Yes, I know it.

However, rather than be serious and, say, cut back on the size of state government, or propose getting rid of Medicaid expansion, or any number of other reasonable, rational proposals, he puts out a completely false "scary" budget so that the press can scream woe is us.

frick him and frick every Republican in this state that voted for him.

"The state Department of Health would take the deepest cuts -- about $656.6 million in state funding that balloons to a $2.4 billion hit when the loss of matching federal and other outside revenue is factored."

"It also would eliminate some $10 million that is paid to local sheriffs for parole holds and cut the per diem rate that the state pays to sheriffs and operators of transitional work programs, about $34 million, and eliminate $25.8 million in funding for district attorneys."

"His budget proposal includes the complete elimination of state funding for TOPS scholarships -- about $233.34 million."

I see he is still around 1.5 billion short in cuts.

+1

I do hate, though, that John Kennedy is now apparently seen as our "savior" from this abortion.

Kennedy would likely win and is a better option than Landry. Does mean we'd probably get a Senator Landry, which isn't great, but beats a Governor Landry.

“I’m thinking about it,” Kennedy said in an interview. “I will run if it feels right to me, if it’s something I want to do and if I can really affect some changes to make Louisiana a better place to live and raise a family, not all in that order.”

The thinking is that Kennedy cuts a handshake deal with Landry to stay out of the race and Kennedy then appoints him to the vacated senate seat.

LA GOP is looking to unify behind one candidate early rather than repeat the primary infighting that let Honor Code skate by unscathed in 2015.

Give him a break.

He is probably just still giddy over the big gay Army wedding at West Point.

His pear arse has probably spent all day trying to find his shriveled up pecker to beat off to Toddy's photos.

I've heard this before, but my god you would have to be completely insane, not partially completely, to leave a 5 year term in the US SENATE to be the Governor of a shite hole.

As Treasurer for however long Kennedy knows exactly what LA would be for a republican governor, a political death sentence. Or, ride out 5 years get reelected and call it a day.

Plus its funny once they get to DC they dont come back, ever.

He's going to try to increase state taxes at the time federal taxes are decreasing in order to soften the blow.

Err, Edwards already raised taxes when the state was in a statewide recession. The blow was delivered.
His gambit now is to shift taxes around, but keep revenues from taxes the same.
