Hollywood ridiculed for 'White savior' obsession in wake of 'Blind Side' controversy: 'High price to be paid'

One critic said 'The Blind Side' is 'self-serving and patronizing at best and racist at worst'

Hollywood is facing backlash over accusations it favors "White savior" movie plot lines as controversy continues to emerge regarding the 2009 film "The Blind Side."

Former NFL player Michael Oher, the inspiration behind the Academy Award-winning film, has alleged that he was never legally adopted by the Tuohy family and was tricked into a conservatorship that allowed them to benefit from his name and story financially.

Movie experts and liberal journalists have claimed the film, which received numerous NAACP Image Award nominations and led to an Oscar win for star Sandra Bullock, is yet another example of the "White savior" trope, wherein the stories of victimized minorities are often told from the perspective of "heroic" White characters.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, former Los Angeles Film Critics Association President Claudia Puig said she was not surprised by the revelations about Oher’s story but rather that it had taken him so long to speak out.

"The White savior elements in ‘The Blind Side’ are pretty egregious. That movie is self-serving and patronizing at best and racist at worst," she said.

Well it's final then...whites need to only help white, Latinos only Latinos, Asians only Asians, and blacks only blacks.

Good luck with that...

People like Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy really shouldn't try to help people like this. They end up getting branded racist and having their reputations damaged.

No good deed goes unpunished.

My mom helped a kid named Larry Robson when his brother was dying of a brain tumor. Larry lived with my parents for a bit and he was as poor as poor can get. Wore shoes with paper stuffed in the toes.

Larry ended up in the NBA and won a championship with the Houston Rockets. I'm proud of my mom for helping him. When he graduated from college, he acknowledged her.

In the same breath, these people will call for reparations...which is literally a movement to force whites to be the savior of poor blacks.

What's weird about this is that Oher waited all this time to try and claim he was screwed out royalties,,,,,the book and movie have been out for years. Did he go broke or something?

While I understand the sentiment I hope people continue helping others regardless of race. Sadly, in this case, there’s a lot of negativity going on, but there are many instances where kids lives have been dramatically changed for the good.

I think Michael Oher caught a lot of flack for being helped by whites and has been trying for years to separate from the story.

Lol. Timeout. You think that really happened like the movie portrayed?

They just so happened to accidentally run up on, house, and get a top 5 nationally ranked OT qualified for Touhy’s alma mater? Can you calculate the odds of that actually happening like that?

That is the FIRST poor black kid Leigh Ann Touhy ran up on…. In Memphis? A 6-5 315 lb NFL talent OT??

Really?

Yes, it was. He was 16 and did not play football when that woman took him in. It wasn’t until he was a 17 year old junior that he began to excel in football.

It’s wise to be skeptical, but it’s counterproductive when that skepticism becomes cynicism. There are a lot of good people in the world, in fact, most people.

Supposedly he's still worth about 15 million dollars, but who really knows? I think he just wrote a book, so maybe he needs the free publicity to promote it. Also, he was embarrassed by how he was portrayed in The Blind Side movie. I'm sure that probably led to some resentment.

No kidding? Well.. let’s see what Oher himself says….

On Monday, Michael Oher, the ex-NFL star and the inspiration behind the Sandra Bullock hit film "The Blind Side," alleged in court documents obtained by Insider that the Tuohy family never actually adopted him. Instead, the filing states, the family used him as a "gullible" young man who could be "exploited for their own benefit."

Jason Whitlock interview
There’s a good explanation around 9:00 in the video.

When they took him in, he'd played only a year of HS football on defense and was nothing special.

His best prospect seemed to be basketball. Sean Tuohy was working contacts to try to get Oher on a basketball team at small college.

The idea that he was some kind of football phenom when they took him in is complete bullshite.
